I am starting a custom build and have a couple questions. Is the standard bottom metal and hinge plate from a remington for a 300 win mag in a Mcmillan stock ok, or should I look at aftermarket. What is the best bang for your buck for aftermarket bottom metal?

Re: Remington Bottom metal

If you are shooting competitions, you may want the detachable magazine ..... for quicker reload.

But, if you are just shooting for fun or hunting, the hinged floorplate works just fine. I still use the hinged floorplate on my Remington .308 and my 7mm Rem Mag. But, if I do decide to put a bottom metal on it I will go with the Wyatt's. They drop in with no inletting required. I also prefer the magazine release on the Wyatt's over the others (which are large and stick out way too far). If you go with something like Badger or CDI (which are really good too), you are going to pay about 100 bucks more, plus at least that much to have someone mill out your stock to fit. So, you'll probably end up paying 150-200 bucks more than you would for the Wyatt's.

Re: Remington Bottom metal

Stiller makes bottom metal that doesn't require professional inletting and uses AICS mags. It requires a little clearancing on the sides, but this can be done by hand as any slop is covered up. It's relatively inexpensive compared to the others as well. The only problem is it isn't flush with the stock like the others. I'm gonna get one here soon.
