Gunsmithing Remington Extractor Problem...

I am having one-hell-of-a-time installing a simple "old style" riveted, Remington extractor. I have done dozens of these with little difficulty, this one, however, is giving me chest pain! These come with two rivets. I opened the package and immediately lost one, then the extractor itself flew across the shop as I was removing it to adjust the tension. Once the extractor was located, some time later, I managed to rivet it in place. Once that was done, I beveled the exposed edges of the extractor to blend with the bevel on the bolt face, and cleaned up the exposed "bump" of rivet material so the bolt would not bind.

Once the work was completed I placed a dummy cartridge in the magazine and attempted to cycle the bolt. I find that the bolt handle has to be slapped with the palm of the hand to close on the round. I painted the inside of the bolt face/extractor with "Dye Kem" layout marker, and again cycled the bolt on the dummy cartridge, and find that the only thing that shows any contact with the cartridge is the extractor hook.

Any suggestions before I go ahead and tap the hook back a bit? My frustration level is high enough that I had to leave the shop for the time being. I would appreciate your thoughts on this, I know some of you must have suffered through this too...

Good Shooting,

Jim

I don't always trust the 'new' part to be in spec. If you have done it several times before I might try another extractor before you smash it with a hammer,

Jim,

We've all been there.

First, repeat the word goos-fra-ba, goos-fra-ba...

Sounds like your doing things right. New extractor may be out of spec.

I would check the tension with a dummy round with the bolt out of the rifle and visually compare that extractor to known good one. If its too out of spec replace it. If it looks and feels in spec, polish it up a bit and try it again.

If it still doesnt work right replace it. Fortunatly they arent expensive parts.

Re: Remington Extractor Problem...

Thanks for the advice guys. Now that my blood pressure is down a bit and the chest pain has subsided, I can head back out to the shop and give it another go. I think some additional beveling and polishing of the hook area may be the way to go.

Thanks again,

Jim

Re: Remington Extractor Problem...

+1 on the extractor being out of spec. I've had the exact same problem even with the newer rivetless extractors where the "lip" (or hook as you call it) impeded the cycling because it was too long. I made a few passes with a dremel and problem solved.

Re: Remington Extractor Problem...

This morning my blood pressure and frustration level were down so I went to work on the extractor. A little bit of cautious beveling and polishing and the extractor works just fine. A little bluing to clean up the areas I hit with the stone and I'm all done. Thanks for the support.

Good Shooting,

Jim
