Im just about to remove an extactor from a Remington 700 bolt in order to blueprint the action and bolt. Just wondering how do I ensure that I replace it correctly, obviusly it should be replaced as it was taken out but is there a stop or some groove that it must stop against so that its sitting at the correct degree inside the bolt or do I need to swivel it around that it looks OK.

Re: Remington extractor removal/replacement

It is pretty straight forward, but you could snap a digital photo of it before removal that way you can be sure you have it back the right way when you put it back in.

You had better have a replacement when you are done. Nine chances out of ten or less it will not work satisfactory or for any length of time once it has been removed. Sometimes if you're carefull removing and replacing you can get lucky but I wouldn't hold my breath nor bet more than 25 cents on it or whatever Ireland's coinage is.

Personally I wouldn't waste my time reinstalling a used one unless it was a desperate last ditch effort to get a rifle up and running.

Grind a tool to fit under the extractor and cut the bolt face without removing it. I was wondering the same thing and told to do this and it works fine.
