just looking around on the internet and found this. i think im goin to have to scrap my K98 buld because of the condition of the reciever and because the cost is going to end up being waaaay too much. i really should have done a bit more researchbefore i bought the rifle. anyways back to my questions:

is there a way i can just buy the rifle wthout the stock and bottom metal from remington?

i know remmys are a common way to go but is it the best?

anyone have any experience with this particular rifle?

i like .308 a lot is this best?

You can buy the action and bolt from Brownells. I think the trigger comes with that also. No barrel. Will run you about $400+ if I recall correctly. You can also look in a pawn shop or other store and try to find the cheapest donor rifle that you can for the action.

As for it being the best, that is up for debate. I used to build off of Rem 700 actions, but have started going custom from the get go. I have found that by the time that you true the action and have other work done to it, you have close to or as much in it as you would it you just started out with a custom action that does not need anything done to it.

Everyone needs a 308 in the safe. Ammo is plentiful and it just a great all around caliber. You can't really appreciate the utility of a 308 unless you have spent some time behind it. I don't think you can go wrong with it as your choice.
