Remington/Savage Actions

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

I believe Brownells has them, don't quote me, but I would just get one from the classifieds here on the hide there's always at least one on there.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

I just checked Brownells. They only had 2, one Remington and one custom, neither are what I'm looking for. But thanks.

The link is good, great prices. Might be the way to go. I was hoping to go with a Remington because you can get the heavy barrels in .300 Win Mag from Midway USA for around $300, but now I'll be looking more into the Savage.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

+1 for Northland and also for Savage. Northland is located on on savageshooters.com forums. they should have everything you need to do a 300WM. I'm currently saving to do a Savage 300WM myself and this is the route I will be going. Good luck!

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

another +1 for northland for actions. and they are also now carrying criterion barrels (kreigers, button rifled) at nice prices. check here if you havent been pointed already:
http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/board,64.0.html

it may be cheaper to buy a complete rifle in long action. I picked up a 116 in 30-06 for my 6.5 build for $350 shipped. Sold the stock and barrel and ended up having less than $250 in the stainless action.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

I agree with you on buying the whole gun and saving money. I have seen plenty of model 110's for under $300 which is less than what an action will cost and now you have a brand new action and accu-trigger. Get a Criterion barrel for under $300 and a B&C or Stockade stock and you have less than $1000 dollars into a custom gun that will shoot like one too.

Were have you seen that?

Also don't I want an action from a 10 or 12 series for target shooting? I don't know much about Savage actions, I'm just basing that off of the comparison between a Remington 700 and a 770 action.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

If youre planning on a 300wm, you'll need a 110 action (or any long action, 110,111,112,114,116). The two digit series (10,11,12,14,16) are short actions and the three digit series are long actions. Check gunbroker, there are always 110 rifles for under $300, usually 30-06. Stay away from the WSM actions, as they are controlled feed, and the savage 300wm factory guns are built with the push feed bolts. You should be able to pick up an older, staggerfeed blind mag 110 for around 250 or so. If you are doing the barrelling yourself, add another $100 for go/no-go gages, barrel wrench and action wrench. Dont waste time with the wood barrel blocks that some are saying you can swap barrels with (along with the barrel wrench), an action wrench and a barrel wrench make the job much easier and quicker. So, for around $350 or so, you can have an action ready for a new barrel, then sell the old barrel and stock.
Dont forget to get a new recoil lug (sharpshootersupply has great ones) and swap the old one, they are notorious for not being true from the factory. they are around $30, and just slip into place.
As far as barrels go, any well known barrel maker should be okay. I bought a Mcgowen prefit when I did my 6.5 creedmoor. Lothar, Shilen, Pac-Nor and others also offer prefits. Check with northlander for some of these and factory takeoffs if you would rather go that route. McGowen had a sale when I was looking and that is one of the reasons I went with them. They offer 10% off to new customers and also run other sales periodically. They also have remington prefits (and others for that matter).
hope that helps some.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

2guard took care of that for me lol. You won't be disappointed going this route. Trust me, I see a ton of guys doing this now and it's been working great for them. I am going to do this as well for my next build. By far cheaper than a Remington and no difference with accuracy

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

I would like everything to be new. I'm new to "gun building", but I'm under the impression that a new action with a new barrel designed to prefit that action can just be put together right? You don't need gauges for that right?

I didn't know Bud's sells them, that's a decent deal. Northland has really good deals on short actions, but for a Savage 110 LA with a barrel is $600, which I didn't think was to great. I bought my first long range rifle about a year and 2 months ago. It's a Remington 700 sps Varmint in .308. Awesome gun, great accuracy right out of the box. But with the .300WM I just don't see a gun like that. So far, all the heavy barreled Remington 700's are only in .223, .308, or smaller calibers. Same with Savage. Can't seem to find many pre fitted barrels for the .300WM Savage actions either.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

You still need head space gauges, no matter what.

There's only two different kinds of barrels. Small shank, and large shank. So new or used you have to know which your action is and order the proper barrel for it.

How much do you want to spend on the barrel? Sharpshooter supply can chamber one in anything you want.

And
Northlander has some shilen 30-06 and 300 win mag's listed

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

Check mcgowen for barrels, they are apparently still running a sale:
http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/catalog4.htm
You can have it chambered in 300wm with whatever contour you want, check the savage varmint and savage bull contours. The varmint is the factory varmint hb contour, and the bull is basically untapered, full 1" at muzzle. Mcgowen is usually only a 3-4 week wait.
You could pick up a stainless 112 action from northlander for $375, and a mcgowen barrel for $265, and all you would need is a stock, recoil lug, headspace gauges, and wrenches.
The above deal from mkg is a great deal also, and the factory laminated stock on the bvss is pretty nice.

I believe Jim has a Shilen varmint taper in 300WM . You might be able to work a deal with Jim to swap the barrels. Get some credit for the factory barrel and for some extra $ have a Shilen barrel installed.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

I guess I know even less then I thought lol. I've looked around at a lot of barrel sights, but I haven't seen many that list what type of barrel it is. I'm looking for a heavy barrel of course. As for the barrel price, I'm not sure yet, depends on the deal I can get on the action. I'd say between $300-500.

Yes, I'll take a look at that, don't think I've seen it. Sounds like a good price. When I was on Savage's website I didn't see any heavy barreled .300Win Mags.

To clarify, I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308, and when I say "heavy barrel" I'm talking a barrel like that. Thanks for all the help so far everyone.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

tanda , You will not see a 112 on Savages web site they are special order only. However, a 112 BVSS would look just like a model 12 BVSS except in a long action. The barrels are varmint contour ( .8" at the muzzle )

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

You would need to order through Savage. Your best bet would be get a 110 and do a barrel. For the time/cost of ordering through Savage you could have one done and ready for less money and time

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

Sounds like it if you have to order from Savage. I'm not in a hurry to get the rifle, I just want to get the right one. I just looked at the 12 Series BVSS. I like the barrel and action but I don't like the wood stock. I saw some 110's cheap. If you have to have head space gauges for a new or used barrel/action combo then I might as well go that route. I'm thinking that's what I'll do.

The rifle I posted is at Northland shooter supply.

Ok. I'm going to send him a PM with a few questions I have on it. Thank you. Also, is Northland just a page on a forum, they don't have a regular website?

Also I found that .300 Win Mag is available in the Remington 700PSS and the 5R. I did not know that, never seen them anywhere. Nothing against Savage, I know there very accurate, but I personally prefer Remington. That being said the best rifle for the money is what I will buy/build.

Re: Remington/Savage Actions

These days, the only reason I that might do a build on a Savage is if they don't chamber one of their factory guns in my desired caliber (for examples, .280 Rem and .260 Rem). I think there are real advantages (like warrantees, etc...) to buying a factory rifle, and current Savage offerings cover a remarkably broad spectrum of selections.

For the most part, any mods I might do would probably be confined to getting an install-ready Savage Varmint Taper barrel in my preferred chambering from L-W. More than that, it's unlikely there'd be any features I couldn't get to suit my preferences on at least one of their factory models.

As long as the needed components exist on <span style="font-style: italic">some</span> current Savage offering, it shouldn't be all that hard to get them to make one up for you special. Be aware that some previous Savage Magnum actions used a different barrel shank thread/diameter if you choose to rebarrel. Make sure old rifle and new barrel match if you go with a donor action.
