Are you speaking of the SPS AAC/SD model?
I am taking a guess that this is the one you are speaking of, i do not believe that Remington has an "XTac" model.
I do not own one, I considered buying one because I really wanted the 20" threaded barrel.
You are correct, though. No one has written a decent review of them. The damn things sell like hot cakes and the standard 1-12" model seemed to shoot pretty damn good. The dearth of accuracy reports made me think that they are probably decent shooters, but not exceptional. I figured that if they were shooting half inch groups, folks would be tellng us.
You would need to replace the stock on the SPS which will bring your cost up to over 800 bucks.
In the end, I chose to go with the 5R. I liked the idea of stainless steel, I liked the 5R barrel and I liked the fact that it comes in a very good stock that does not need replaced. Of course, less than a month after I bought it, they released the new 20" threaded 5R.
The X mark pro trigger is a decent trigger, I had mine set to 3.5 lbs and it shot very well. I have since replaced that trigger with a pre-06 remington trigger. I prefer the ribbed trigger shoe. it is a "feel" thing.
My stock 5R is about a 1/2" gun with factory match ammo.

I found one for $700 range shipped, and have hear some similar comments on the factory stock, but seems that slayer's stock may not affect his accuracy all that much.

ooops..final question sorry...I have a yankee hill 7.62 QD can for my POF 308. In order to put this one on my Rem 700 I would have to buy my fourth QD flash hider to interchange to another rifle. How bad would the Rem 700 look with the flash hider hanging off of it?????

Rrflyer-definatley keep me posted on all your findings and of corse your opinion. congrats on your new toy. Do you have a can yet for your sps Aac? I heard the can makes a world of difference with accuracy. Let us know..

i'm pretty happy with the aac-sd too.
b&c stock and weaver 3-10x40 at the time these groups were shot
factory trigger came out pretty nice
can't remember if these groups were factory 168gr amax loads or reloads.
if they were reloads they would have been 178gr amax, 44.3 gr varget, hornady brass
worked up this load for my old sps varmint.
both groups 100 yds
shots 4-10 through the gun
shots 11-15 through the gun

If factory configuration I was averaging just a hair under 1 MOA at 100 yards over five 5-shot groups.
This was using a Rock BR rest a Bushnell 10x scope and Black Hills 175gr Match.
The best of the five was .591 MOA. The worst was 1.387 MOA. Group sizes were calculated with "On-Target".
The problem was the inconsistency. The factory stock it a problem with this rifle. I couldn't come close to those on a bipod because I couldn't get the preload on the stock consistent from shot to shot. For the next range trip it will be going into a B&C Light Tactical.

Yah I was hoping to have it at the range day but it just didn't happen. Hopefully I'll be making it out this saturday and be able to take it to 1,000.

i know your trying to do a budget tactical build...you might check out what some guys have done to the factory stock for cheap. It'd be keeping in line with your entry level performance idea.

The Hogue is a little flimsy on the fore end. There are several suggestions on site that are easy fixes for little money.

Just finished my second build of a Reminton 700 SPS Tactical. This one is an AAC-SD. Hope to take it to the range this weekend if I can get out of the shop. If I do I'll post a report on how it shoots. First one shoots great, this one I put a little more time and thought into.

So I took my new AAC-SD to the range today, I've been working on the build for several weeks now, It's looking pretty close to a M40A3 and I'm pretty proud of myself on the build. Now when you go to the range with a really cool looking weapon, I have some advice...You need to know how to shoot.
So with some M118 FMJ 168gr which I know is a little light for a 1 in 10 twist but I have a bunch of the stuff, it took three shots to zero the scope and then started shooting some groups.
I started out doing well, my best group I put 4 rounds in 1 jagged hole about 1/2" across got nervous and dropped 1 out. I knew I couldn’t make 5 touch. Wound up about 8/10ths of an inch. In the mean time, folks started coming up admiring and pointing and commenting, and my groups stated growing like Iowa corn.
I'm not a competition shooter and I'm not used to that pressure,
So as the groups got worse the crowd went away. Thats why I prefer to shoot in the woods to hide my shame.
Anyway The rifle shot really nice, I'm sure it is way more capable than I am. I get my can this week (AAC 762-SD) but still have a couple of weeks to wait before shooting through it becomes legal in my state.
I'm just an old Marine and I ain't no sniper, but I love to shoot and I love nice weapons and enjoy tinkerin' to improve them. The Remington 700 AAC-SD for the money is one heck of a buy, and with a little tender lovin’ care can be both a thing of beauty and a damn fine shooter. I give it a thumbs up…

Don't worry about the pressure.
I was at the range testing the AAC-SD off a bipod (which it doesn't like) and it was shooting poorly. Hovering around MOA at 100 yards.
One guy who was there with his grandkids started spotting my target. I actually have it on one of the video clips where he whistles and says "nice shootin' there". I didn't have the heart to tell him that it's not anywhere near my average and the other rifle in my trunk would better those groups by half.
M118 is not 168gr. It's 173gr and no precision ammo. M118LR is the 175gr surplus that many here like to shoot. The AAC-SD will like that better, but Black Hills Match will give the rifle an honest chance of showing you it's potential. I ran a second day of testing with the rifle on a rest (consistent pressure on the forend). It did MUCH better.
"Budget Precision" Part 3 should be up soon. I just need to shoot the final clip and add the soundtrack. That will be the final test in it's stock configuration. We will be tuning it up after this.

I took mine out friday and today.
Groups at 100 were around .75 with surplus 175 SMK's.
Mine seemed to like the 178 Amax way better. Only shot one group with them at 100 but it was .5.
They seemed more consistent out to 500 yards as well.

Sorry, that's what I meant. The M40 is going on the AAC-SD project. The Light Tactical is currently on my SPS-V.

If the render goes as planned (because I have been killing computers this month) then I should have it up on YouTube by midnight.

There may be another small hangup before I can install the magazine system. That is going to depend on another company. I know it seems odd, but I have a ton of the stuff in 200 round Green Battle bags, Inside are 10 ea’ 20 round white boxes. Both green bags and white boxes are marked with a white sticker Identifying contents as "Cartridges 7,62 X 51 mm M118 FMJ 168gr lot 03 IK 03"
Battle bags state at the top of the stickers 200pc, each box at the same place on the sticker states 20pc. Bottom of casing are stamped, IK03 7.62X51 Red sealer around primer.
I've been shooting this stuff for a while now and it shoots great both out of my National Match M1A and my first SPS Tactical with a 1 in 12 twist.
If I remember right the cardboard boxes it all came in stated manufacture as Lake City. I bought a bunch of it here a while back specifically for my M1A and it shot great, so I decided to buy some more but when I looked it up again they were sold out and have not gotten it back into stock.
Like I said sounds odd but shoots great. Couldn’t wait for the 175gr to show up so I shot some out of the AAC. Two nice groups and then they went to crap. I think it was just me.

Sounds like it might be M852. That was a 168gr Sierra Match King. I don't recall what the bulk packaging for it looked like. It's been too long ago.
If it's not a BTHP and it's just a FMJ, then I have no idea what you have. If it shoots, then shoot it!

My SSD likes a load I worked up with the 175 SMK's, varget and Hornady match brass that I got back when I was working with remmy with a 1-12" barrel.
and for SFS,
The hogue stock is really the biggest drawback, Swapped it for a take off HS Precision as they fit me really well.
I had originally tried to stiffen up the foreend of a hogue stock back when I had the SPS tactical. I bedded the action and cut slots along the little "stiffing ridges" in the fore end where I placed two lengths of welding rod, then filled the entire front end with epoxy (boy did it get hot!!!)
It only really helped a little, it would still flex and touch the barrell when pressure was applied on the bipod. I even widened the barrel channel. I got it to where it was usually OK, but honestly the biggest thing you can do to improve the groups is get a new stock.
My SSD likes a load I worked up with the 175 SMK's, varget and Hornady match brass that I got back when I was working with remmy with a 1-12" barrel.

The hogue stock is really the biggest drawback, Swapped it for a take off HS Precision as they fit me really well.

Where is a good site to find m118 for the 308 everywhere I look is sold out or a little over a buck a shot. Also with rem 700 sps Aac sd how hard is it to convert to mag fed? And best stock to go with it?

I have converted 2 SPS Tactical’s now, it is a simple process. There are several different manufacturers for the bottom metal and mag’s that come at several different costs. That will remain a personal and budget required choice on your part. Other than that it's just a matter of inletting the Stock and bolting it all together.
My first build I inleted myself and just used the Hogue that came on the weapon. The stocks factory mag’ well was pretty close to fitting and just needed a little tweaking here and there. I used a Badger M5 lower metal and it came with an inlet template. I also had to remove and replace the factory pillar bedding with those supplied by Badger. "The length of these is critical to smooth operation of the loading system". The overall diameter of the pillar holes both in the stock and in the pillars themselves is substantially larger. The stock must be reamed to .562" dia' to accept the larger size pillars. These have to be bedded with epoxy, there are treads that explane this process. It all works smooth as glass but I still have the Hogue spongy fore end problem that I didn’t know about at the time.
My second build was much easier, this time on the AAC-SD version of the same rifle. Since I knew about the Hogue stock this time I used a Bell & Carlson (I’m still working on a budget) Medalist stock and again the Badger M5 bottom metal, but this time I boxed up the stock and sent it to Badger, bought the M5 direct and had them inlet it, Primo job in about 10 days. I saved a few bucks buying directly from the manufacturer on the M5 but turned around and put the money back into the inlet job. Speed and Quality of Service was exemplary and looks like it came out of the factory, (pun intended).
This stock I modified before sending it to Badger by removing the palm swells and squaring up the fore end to look more like a McMillian A4. There are several threads here on SH that describe the process. I did all the body work on the stock Before sending the stock for inletting.

don't have any pictures as I am at the hospital but I love my sps tactical, I've reached out to 1k yards with it and hornady sst ammo without problems
only downfall is the stock in my opinion, I'm getting a aics1.5 soon
