New to the forum, wanting to build a rifle geared for long range shooting out to 1000 yards. I've been hunting and shooting my whole life, I'm comfortable out to 300 yards or so. I bought a Remington VTR .308 a couple years ago and put a Leupold Mark 4 - 4.5x14x50mm ER/T mil dot scope. I've only ran a couple boxes of shells through it and haven't had any problems with it, just always hunt with my Browning 300 WSM or my bow. Now that I'm wanting to try and get into LR shooting, I'm reading lots of bad things about this gun and this scope. The un symmetrical muzzle brake (which doesn't work near as well as muzzle brakes on other rifles I have), only 14 power and no zero stop on the scope. Should I sell the both or just one, sink money into this gun or what?

Your biggest disadvantage is that shit stock. Upgrade to a b&c or hs (or anything better) and get a dbm. Upgrade the trigger with your next paycheck. Then shoot the shit out of it. You will need more practice then fancy shit. That barrel will work for now cause chances are, it'll outshoot you. With it being 1/12 twist and 20", you should be able to get a 168 out to 1000 no problem.

Learn to shoot distance and learn your gear first.

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking of a different stock and I figured the trigger would need to go. It's part of the recall and I'm not a fan of it anyways. If a buddy of mine buys the whole setup, i was looking at the savage model 10 fcp hs precision and was kicking around looking at a night force or a higher end vortex.

For the price of the savage you could also look at a Remington 5r mil spec. I had a savage 10 fcp hs for several years and shot it quite a bit. When I wanted to upgrade practically had to give it away. Now have a 5R .308 with a 24'' barrel. In my 2 examples of rifles the Savage wasn't any comparison to the Remington. Anyway not to offend any of the Savage guys on here, this is referenced to the two particular rifles of mine.
