Re: remington xcr tactical long range
What will you be using it for? Just target shooting on paper/steel? Or for varmint/big game hunting (deer and smaller)? If it is just for punching paper/steel, go 308. If you have any intention of bigger game, go .300 winmag and get a good brake installed.
Also, I do not know for sure, but have heard rumors/grumblings of people dissatisfied with Remington Quality Control and out of the box accuracy. I don't know if it is true or not, so don't hang me. Might want to save a bit of cash up and send it to Chad Dixon (
www.longriflesinc.com) or other competent smith for an action truing and any other accuracy enhancers. Just shoot it first and see if it does what you want.
I went Savage LRH in 300 winmag and it is deadly accurate with handloads. And for what Tunin said, don't skimp on glass when you are looking past 400-500 yards. Go Nightforce (look in the For Sale section for GREAT deals).
Handloading may very well be your friend, but also check out Federal Match ammo (and others too). If you are ONLY going to shoot factory ammo, may want to stick with a 308 as there are more options for factory loaded accurate ammo.
Also, don't overlook Savage's for long range accuracy (crazy accurate out of the box). Some don't like the accu-trigger or barrel nut, but you may want to at least have a look at them. Triggers are easily changed at a smith, and a decent wrench-monkey can change a barrel on a Savage in his garage without dropping a ton of cashola on tools and equipment.
Hope I have helped.
