Re: Removing barrel

you're going to need some heat to break that bbl free, smith had a hard time pulling mine off until he threw it into the oven.

You don't need heat, you need a good action wrench and a good barel vise.

Re: Removing barrel

It screws off but you will need an action wrench and barrel vise. Otherwise, I fear you may damage something. The barrels are usually RFT and sometimes have locktite applied. a good "cheater bar" will help too.
If you friend has a lathe similar to the Grizzly that allows the barrel to go completely thru the chuck then the action/barrel may not need to be separated.

Re: Removing barrel

It is very straight foreward, the barrel just screws onto the action. The only trick is that it will be extrememly tight, so getting a grip on a round tube such as a barrel without leaving marks is very difficult. Also, if the action isn't supported properly, it can be tweaked as well. This is one of those instances where the right tools for the job will save you more than they cost to buy. A tweaked action will set you back around $300 and a new barrel will be somewhere around $500 when you get it chambered and fitted.

Here is an action wrench and the guy will sell you a barrel vice both for under $200 shipped:

Action Wrench

You can likely sell them when finished if you don't have a use for them afterwards.

The other option is to have someone who already has the tools do the threading work.

i'd leave the barrel on, but that's just me.

Re: Removing barrel

yah know.....i would demure to the gunplumber on how to correctly thread the barrel......FN actions got a slot cut in the barrel for the claw extractor.....taking off the barrel and timing the whole thing back to where it needs to function right may take some doing.

i'm just sayin

Re: Removing barrel

Ok thanks for the help guys. If we cant leave the battel in the action when threading it i think that i will just have a gunsmith do it. Any idea on what that would cost? thanks again. Jesse
