Smiths, I have always wondered this....

Is it possible to bend a barrel at the threaded tenon when removing a barreled action from a new bedding job?

In the past I have attempted bedding jobs and had difficulty removing the barreled action, I have at times grabbed the barrel just beyond the forend of the stock and attempted to seperate the two with the looming question in the back of my mind "...am I destroying this rifle?"

My next question is how do you detect such a bend even if it is ever so small?

Do a search and look at the tooling Chad Dixon uses to remove an action after a bedding job. It works!

I get a long bolt from the hardware store with same threads as action and screw into action and bump it out. That way you are not bending anything. I don't think you would bend the barrel anyways.

I make/sell a tool to address this.

My "action jack". It's designed to lift an action out of a freshly bedded stock with no rocking/bending/grunting effort to ensure nothing gets goofed up.

Simply, it's a U shaped piece that goes over the top of the action and rests on the stock. A modified scope base is attached and some studs. Nuts get tightened and it literally lifts the receiver straight up/out of the stock.

Provided you released it properly and don't have any mechanical locks from bedding creep, it'll work perfectly every time.

there's a few threads on this forum showing its use.

Awesome, thanks for the responses. I have seen the action jack on Chads website, I did not know he sold them though.

Very cool, I will do a search. Thanks
