Removing Brass Shavings

Recently I've paid more attention to prepping my .223 brass and uniform the primer pocket as well as deburr the flash hole. After doing this I tap each round on a flat surface until no more brass shavings come out. Then after about 800 cases I put them in a tumbler with corncob and the complete bowl of the tumbler is covered in brass shavings after a few hours. I still think there is more brass sticking inside the cases and don't want to pepper my barrels with this stuff after firing. I have a Thumlers Tumbler on the way to use with water and stainless media hoping that will really scrub all the stuff out. How have you guys dealt with this issue?

Re: Removing Brass Shavings

I was hoping for a faster method, I have over 2000 cases right now I prepped, might have to do the brush thing though.

Re: Removing Brass Shavings

I don't think you will have that issue any longer once you start tumbling with steel. It is hands down, the best method out there. Thank the Lord for Terry.

Re: Removing Brass Shavings

Inspect with Doctors Otoscope , you can buy one cheap on the net.
This tells you if there is any internal faults and if the flash hole deburr has infact deburred .
Then after you tap out as much shavings as possible use an internal case brush or small bottle brush or test tube brush to dislodge any stubbon shavings. As Victortn said , a blast of compressed air works wonders also.
Anyway you don't want to tumble a case after you have match preped it . It will ding up the case mouth .

With corn cob or walnut...no. However, the stainless media actually brightens the shit out of the inside like new.

Yes hard media like stainless will scoure it inside better than other softer medias. However I don't want to tumble a case after it is match preped in that kind of media . The brass shavings are the problem from case prep . So if you are going to tumble after flash hole deburring and primer pocket uniforming then I would leave squaring and chamfering the case mouth until after the tumble. Which may still see some shavings inside the case anyway . Thats why I do an extra internal inspect and clean out last. I have tried tumbling last and did not like the small dings and dents it puts in the case mouth area. I just can't see the point of trying to produce a precision square mouth and chamfer and then tubling the hell out of it. Just my personal preference really.
What shape and size stainless media are you using? I have only tried 1/8 ball cones , that I got from a local factory.
They are two large in my opinion and cause too much peening. I see that you can get smaller balls and pins.
What smaller size and shape do you recommend?

The Stainless Media he is talking about is a pin style. They are 0.040 dia x 0.25"lg.

Re: Removing Brass Shavings

Probably a dumb ass question but has anyone used the SS media in a vibrating tumbler or is it only to be used in the horizontal rotating tumbler? It'd be nice If I could just swap out the walnut media for the SS media.....

Word of caution with compressed air. You can easily send the brasss shaving flying into your eye at a high rate of speed with compressed air. Wear glasses if you do so.
