Removing JB Weld

I've come to the decision that I need to remove a two-piece set of optics bases that were bedded to my Rem 700 receiver with JB Weld. I never thought that I'd need more cant that this set provides, but sadly I was wrong.

Other than removing the action from the stock and removing the bolt prior to heating the area above 600 degrees (as per the JB Weld site), does anyone have any experience or advice?

Any chance that this would damage my receiver?

600* is pretty scary. I don't know shit from shinola brother but that makes me nervous, lol.

JB Grind will take JB Weld off....

Use a propane torch and you will be fine,just keep moving the flame slowly back and forth on the base and it should break the bond.

I've got a propane torch and Tempilaq for annealing. I'll give it a swing. Grinding my receiver might make me cry.

Success!!! I couldn't wait for the weekend to see if I could get this done, so I came home and broke out the propane torch and Tempilaq. I painted a line of 650 Tempilaq around each base and slowly passed the torch over the point where the base met the receiver. I had read on another site that you can tell when the JB Weld had dissapated by the slightest hint of smoke (that's the JB Weld burning off). I then removed the base screws and gave each base a gentle tap with a hammer. Easy enough, the bases slid off with very little residue left on the receiver. After a quick cleanup, it was good to go.

so basically the scope base was heated ( might be trashed) and the receiver would have never got too hot since the JB weld would not be a great heat conductor?

Right. I kept the flame focused on the bases and not the receiver. I checked the area ahead and behind the bases by touch, to ensure the heat didn't transfer too far.

I usually find that stuff falls off all by itself!
