Hi folks,

Need some help. I am in Houston, Tx. Does anyone know a good rifle smith who can do two things.

1. Remove the pinned muzzle brake on my Armalite Ar-10A2. It's a standard 3 flute brake that is pinned in from the bottom. I am not sure if there are threads on the barrel that the brake has been screwed onto before it was pinned. Bought it new from Armalite.

2. Install threads so that that I can mount a suppresor. Specifically, a Thunderbeast 30P-1. 5/8 24 standard threads are needed.

Any suggestions and any idea on cost?

Thanks gents.

yeah....them pinned on deals are a royal ass-whipping to get off....and once you do get them off...its ugly

big pipe wrench and a huge ubber maxi-big cheater bar......just don't twist the barrel in the upper

then thread to your suppressors specs

cheers

Another vote on letting a pro handle the job for you and yet another vote for Steve and the guys at ADCO!! I have let them do several things for me over the years from gunsmithing work on ARs to complete builds and they are first rate all the way.

The process will destroy the muzzle device already on the gun because they mill it off instead of screwing around with attempting to remove the pin, etc., but the threads beneath will be intact so that you can install a replacement muzzle device of your chosing.

They charge $40 for the service, plus return shipping at cost. (Extreme is lucky since he's local to ADCO he doesn't have to pay for S&H!!) You won't have to pay for disassembly/reassembly as they can perform the job without taking your complete upper apart.

What you WILL need to have them do while they have it is to check to ensure that the threads aren't damaged and are concentric to the bore so that you can use it with a suppressor which will run you another $25.

Best to e-mail with them to discuss what specifically you want/need and get their recommendations. Steve and the guys will take excellent care of you!

Kenda - didn't get your email?

For the rest of you gents - thanks for the suggestions. Great stuff. Going to make some calls today.

Question - for a direct gas system .308 carbine will putting a suppressor on it make it get extra dirty extra fast even with match ammo? It takes me an hour to clean this rig without a can....don't give a crap though, this is one of my blasters and I want to shoot with a can.

Thanks!

It will get good and darn dirty fairly quickly when shooting it supressed depending on the can you use, the ammo used, the amount of blowback you get, etc., etc. Your mileage will vary in terms of how fast it will get dirty enough to effect proper function/operation of your rifle.

Yes it will be more dirty with the can. You will also see pressures spike with the can.

Re: Removing Pinned Armalite AR-10A2 brake

Good point - any potential pressure problems if I start shooting 175gr SMK's out of my ar-10a2? Normally, this gun is used as a blaster and shoots 146gr SA ball ammo and is extremly accurate and never experiences failure.

Will putting the can on it jack the pressure up so high that I may need a heavier buffer spring or should I stick with the 146r fmj ammo?

I really want to see how it shoots with the can....more fun that I can handle.

Thoughts?
