I have a friend offering me a custom 308 remington 40-x with shilen stainless barrel but the bolt has gas cut in it and not sure bout the barrel and throat erosion i have inspected the barrel and looks good but buying it is scary due to the fact that the bolt isn't that great of shape the weapon has a bench stock and is single. I'm tempted to buy the damn thing the price is right but would like to get some insight on it, the price 500 -700 just hoping to get some useful info.

Probably had a blown primer or a cracked case which let the hot gases inside the bullet (when fired) come out the back. These gases are so hot that when they come out through a tiny little opening, they can cut the firing pin or bolt face. Sometimes this is caused by a reloader making his rounds "too hot". Loading too hot can also burn out your throat in your chamber, which is why I'd take it to have it checked out.

I could be wrong though. If I am, I'm sure someone will come along real soon and point that out ..... LOL.

the bolt face where the firing pin strikes the primer has circular area that is worn like hot gasses have escape from around the primer and have actually worn a ring around the bolt face. I mainly want the action but if i can get it for a decent price i might use the barrel if its shootable, this friend of mine owns a gunstore so asking him to let me borrow the gun to have a smith look at would be silly as he would offer his smith to offer any opinion on the gun, I would really like to get someone experienced to look at it I would take pictures well detailed pictures and be willing to pay to make a nice weapon out of it.

I second that question!!

OK... Now I understand. With the exception of a new or newly re-surfaced bolt face, I haven't seen a Remington bolt face that DOESN'T have a ring on it. All of mine do and always have... to some degree. Unless it's unusually deep, I wouldn't sweat it.

What are you going to do with it? Just because it is an old "40-X" doesn't mean that it is superior to a tuned 700. Do you want a single shot? Do you want a bench stock? Is the barrel "shot out"? If you need a new barrel, the action should be trued anyway. So...IMHO...for that $500-700 you are getting a dubious rifle that may not meet your needs; and in that case would need $250 in tuning, another $350 for a barrel, and another $250 for installation of that barrel, another $150 or so for bedding, then refinishing and coating the barrel and action for another $200. If the bench stock isn't to your liking, then add another $400 to $800. With all that in mind...I'd get either a custom action or a trued 700 action from Bugholes, or Chad Dixon; then have them fit a barrel, etc., to your desires.
