Agree with Kirk R ^ ^ ^ regarding parts. The extent is how much you want to spend.
In our department's 40 + patrol rifles, I have only seen three failures due to parts:
o worn gas rings (old rifle)
o broken gas key screw (old rifle)
o broken FP (relatively new BM)
The first two, I consider "normal wear & tear maintenance items".
Personally, I keep a couple FP retaining key/pins in my range/field bag. This is NOT a cotter pin. Though I've never lost one, had a friend drop one in grass when cleaning the bolt. These are a little tough to find in the grass.
In my armorer's kit, I keep: gas rings, extractor, FP, FP retainer keys, all small parts for lower, and a complete bolt/carrier assembly and trigger assembly.
Overkill, possibly . . . but I don't want my AR down for long.
