Gunsmithing Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

Vise
Barrel Vise Jaw Blocks
Armorer's Barrel Wrench
1/2" Drive Torque Wrench
Snap ring pliers
1/16" Punch for Gas Tube
Hammer

Head Space Guage or GO / NO_GO Guages would be a good idea as well

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

Tool list will depend on whether the new barrel has the extension already in place or not. Also whether or not the handguard is free-floated and if components will be transferred from an old bbl to the new.

Basic tools:

Upper receiver block or vise fixture
Barrel nut wrench (different mfg's aside from mil spec sometimes have different hole spacing on FF nut)
Punches to drift retaining pins for gas tube/gas block
Torque wrench
Anti-seize grease for barrel nut installation
Headspace gauges
Allen wrench (if gas block doesn't use pins)

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

What's the torque wrench for and how do you use it with the barrel?

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

Oh, I've got most of what I need... I don't have the reciever block...

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

Holy crap, am I a dumb ass.... so that's what the 1/2 hole in the armor's tool in my basement is for!!!

So I need a reciever block and a set of gauges...

WOW! What a simple design. Just plain WOW!

...I'm off to find a 20 inch barrel.

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

GB, You planning on using std front sight?.

If so, make sure it's installed, on your new tube, also, if your using a NEW barrel, and a as NEW bolt, no need for gages.........

If you have a lot of bolt wear, replece it, and go w/ new.

Then you will have no issue's w/Headspacing.

Re: Replacing an AR Barrel? What do I need??

The bolt's got about 400 rounds on in it... I'll call Dan Lilja on Monday and see if they've got any drop in's available.

I'll probably put the gas block (picatinny) on the new barrel... and replace the gas tube. (I just ordered two of them...)

Another question. Why not just build another upper?
