looking for some direction on replacing a m1a bot stop. is there a special tool to taking out the roll pin? does the roll pin come out in one direction and goes back in the same. i use a small allen wrench and while pounding on it nearly damage the rifle. any advise would be appreciated. thank you

Re: replacing m1a bolt stop

I would advise you to stop right now...

You want to be very careful with this, using the proper punch and not banging away, because it is surprisingly easy to break out the roll pin channel on cast receivers rendering the receiver useless without expensive welding and meticulous repair.

Some very experienced smiths use their own custom modified punch, and still find it is prudent to modify the receiver by grinding a small relief channel in the front of the bolt stop bump to facilitate the bolt stop pin removal process safely.

There is nothing wrong with the stock bolt stop and little to be gained by replacing it unless it is damaged.

This is an armorer level operation, so it might be advisable to seek professional help before disaster strikes.

Re: replacing m1a bolt stop

Its not really a big deal, heres how i do it. Drive the pin out from front to rear so there is about 1/8 in. protruding from the receiver ears. Now using a good pair of side cutters grab the pin tightly, now using a brass hammer repeatedly strike the back of the cutters until you can ''pull'' the pin free of the bolt stop. I have used this method dozens of times without so much as scratching the receiver. You dont have to be an Armorer to remove a roll pin.
