Report and pople of picts from Finnsniper 2014

In first week of July me and my shooting budy took part in 15th edition of Finnsniper competition that is run by Ostrobothnia Sniper Association GeoVario LLC - Web Access in association with National Defence Training Association MPK-Etusivu .
Finnsniper took place between 4th and 6th of July in Lohtaja army shooting range.

Event started late Friday afternoon, after a short briefing ,we were given GPS trackers and all pairs were driven to a local shooting range some 11kilometers outside the Army range to complete the first task of the day or i should say night as we started observation at 23:30Hours ,task consisted of identifying 'suspects' among about 40 or so faces that matched the persons on 10 picts we were given, time stoped when first pair got their list complete. Task proved to be extremely dificoult as the 'photo robots' were very creatively disguised sporting,beards,glasses,balaclavas etc so idetifying them was beyond most pairs equipped with riflescopes and binoculars , teams which also carried spotting scopes had an definite edge here.



Observation stage was followed by infitration stage where teams had to get back to the base till 6:00 on foot while avoiding being caught and an additon to that gathering intel on the way. (Gps track of the teams and patrols ,red band is patrol corridor)


On about mid way a road crossed the area being infiltrated and a corridor about 1000m deep and 4000m wide was actively being patrolled by opposing force which did their best to catch as many teams as they could (11 of 22 teams were caught).

About an hour after finish of the infitration stage first shooting stages started.

Stage 2(actualy first of the day) the General
A sniper pair takes position some 500m from enemys CP and needs to eliminate the CO (a yellow popup target with black oficers belt across) targets popup and down randomly and only one is the right one , you had 30min to take the shot (1 shot or both shooters at the same time) , after the shoot rings time started ticking as 'enemy counter attacks' and tries to flank the sniper pair ,which then counter the move by running trough firing positions B-F where they engage the counter attacking targets .2 shots per target fist round is i sa bull score second round counts half and there is no third shot.
All engagments are from improvised positions inside the foliage and only one of 6 positions was shot prone
All target are electronic pop up targets 45cm wide at unknown distances and no electronic rangefinders are allowed.Camouflage is being scored trughout the competition





Stage 1 (second stage of the day) House clearing .
At the begining of the stage the sniper pair get an AK47 secondary weapon , stage starts with elimination of 2 guards that must be done silmuntaineusly with one shoot ,shooters have 2 minutes to prepare and shoot form a bank of logs, then run to the house clear it of all enemys while saving a hostage(i shot that one too). After that part is done pair has 2 minutes each to find and shoot at 2 unknovn distance targets trough a firing line (one canted one horizontal) trick is not to shoot trough the wall(0 points) so a shoot from canted and sideways positions.





Next part of the stage one involved shooting from a small platform in the corner of the house ,vegetation that obscured vision made a high kneeling or standing positions as the only ones viable to engage targets at up to 500m away ,up to two shots per target per shooter.

Stage 3 Elimination of a SF unit.
A SF unit landed in on the range and sniper pair must counter the landing by first eliminating two SF operators that carry laser target designators and after that deal with the rest of the squad. ,shots are taken prone from a sandbunker ,first 2 taregts apear behind a tank target at just over 450m these are dispatched first then finding the rest of the SF team became quite a challange ,mirage was allready thick and targets apeared to be at ranges of 850-1100m and wind was already picking up so knocking all targets down in max 2 shoots and in aloted time was nearly imposible .

Day3
Stage 4 long range targets
All teams take their place on the firing line in the last stage. 10minutes are allowed so that teams make their range maps , there are 10 targets to engage distances ranged from 570m to 1110m shooting range offers considerable width so targets are spread troughout the terrain making a good range map cruicial as we move from target to target, winds have picked up and are running left to right at roughly 3.5-4m/s , vegetation on the range is stout and doesn't move in the wind at all so the only real wind indicator is mirage .As troughout the competition range finders are not allowed so ranging with mil reticle is name of the game all targets are eletronic pop up targets 45cm wide (up o 100cm high). Most rifles on the line are .338LM ,we are shooting a sharp load(3090fps .284 162g A-max) with our .284win so not giving up anything against .338's
