I have been thinking about this for a while and kind of want to give it a go.

I have a Bell and Carlson Alaskan II and I like the feel of the stock but I don't think that it will handle the contour of the barrel that I want to put in it.

I have a Brux Remington Varmint barrel that will be here next week. I can open up the barrel channel but I wont have much meat left.

I was thinking about widening the forend just a tad with fiberglass and resin. I was also thinking about rasing the comb with the same process.

I was going to get the supplies at a local auto body store and then sand and mold it to my liking.

Does anyone have and recommendations on what kind of fiberglass would be lightweight yet strong?

Has anyone tried this? Any websites, or threads would be appreciated.

I know that it would be easier to buy a Mcmmillan, but I like to tinker.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Reshaping Synthetic Stock Questions.

The problem is we don't know what type of resin B&C used. Poly resin over epoxy resin is a no-go. Epoxy resin would be my choice because it usually bonds to poly resin ok. Practice on something else before you do the glassing. Another hint is to use a mix of resin and phenolic spheres (microballoons) on your outer layer. It makes for a more easily shapeable and sandable layer. Read up on techniques and materials and follow your mix ratios exactly.

My gunsmith build up the grip on his Remington .338 w/HS stock with bondo from a bodyshop. Sanded it smooth, primed and painted. It actually looks factory. He extended the pistol grip about 1" down and put in some palmswell for his large hands.
