Hi everyone

I am interested in a new scope or 2 and have settled on the +/-$2000 price range

The scopes that I am currently considering are

Leupold mark 5
Nightforce nx8
Burris xtr 3

The problem is I have not found a place close enough to go and test them all side by side and so figured I might pick one of each up, Test them and then sell the ones I don't like

I would like to standardize my optics and so a scope that has magnification in the 3/4-18x50 and 5-25x50 range would be preferred

It would be nice to be able to scratch of one or 2 from the list before I have to lay the cash down and was hoping someone here could help

Does anyone perhaps have fotos of the Leupold TMR, Nightforce F1 (or other ffp mil hash reticles) and the Burris SCR reticle in the above mentioned scopes in FFP at max and min magnification? I would like to see how much target the center covers at max and how small the reticle gets at min magnification

If there is a scope I should add to the list please let me know

Thanks in advance

Each of the manufacturers that you've listed has reticle diagrams with subtensions on their website. While that won't help you visualize what the reticles look like to you at min magnification, they will most certainly tell you how much the central portion of the reticle subtends in mils.

You DO realize that first focal plane reticles cover the same area of a given target regardless of magnification, right?

Thanks for fast replies

1moa, if you could help me with links to those images I would greatly appreciate it, because I have tried everything and cant find what I am looking for

308pirate, yes I do realize that, have only shooting ffp for a while, certainly not new to the game
The question was more for min magnification, the sport that I shoot is (veld skiet or directly translated to field shoot) it is unknown position (field type) and unknown ranges out to around 400yards

Sometime we have to take take standing snap shots and it is easier as less magnification (for me anyway) so a reticle that gets to small at lower magnification can become a little tricky.

The other side is the lower magnification scopes will double as hunting scopes and in thicker brush I prefer to run lower magnification and again if it gets to small it doesn’t mean much

The thing that will get you with FFP is the zoom ratio.

A 3-9x (3x ratio) for instance the reticle is really easy to use at lowest and highest powers.

A 3-18x (6x ratio) would be harder to use at 3x.

That is exactly why I would appreciate fotos of those scopes at min and max, you just explained my question in much less wording than I did
Appreciate it

What are you actually doing in these matches? Unless you’re having to mil the unknown distance targets and dial in corrections based on impacts I would consider a second focal plane scope if easy minimum reticle visibility is a chief concern.

The NF F2 is NOT a FFP optic.

F2 is NFs designation for the second focal plane optics. F1 is their designation for first focal plane optics.

What do the specifications tell you? Plus, subtensions on FFP is the same at any magnification.

In the specs you are looking for these...

Linear FOV (ft/100 yd) - Low 20.5
Linear FOV (ft/100 yd) - High 4.2

For you, the scope with the lowest FOV at Low would be your huckleberry without math based on reticle specs or zoom ratio. Nobody says you have to use 3x on a 6x zoom ratio. You use the lowest mag setting based on preference. So, there really is no point in your requests to determine which scope to purchase. There are too many other variables that are far more important. Also, would you buy three new cars to determine which one you want to keep and sell the other two as used?

If you buy from Camera Land, B&H Photo, EuroOptic, Amazon, you get at least 15 days to check them out and return the ones you don't want. Just don't mount them or scratch them.
