I will be purchasing a new scope in the near future. Trying to sort through all the different brands. But reticle choices seem to be over whelming me. I think I would like to go to a xmas tree or a Horus reticle. Has any of you ever went to one of these type articles and just absolutely hated it? My reason for going to one of those type of articles is that I'm 54 years old and I have to wear my readers to dial. I also do enjoy holding off more than dialing. But dont do it if there is a lot of wind. I am now using a USO GAP reticle.

Horus sucks.

Edit to add that while for a new shooter or a strict 308 shooter they could be useful but as experience grows you will likely find them busy and annoying. There are plants of excellent Christmas tree style that do better job. The SKMR3 and the new NF XT come to mind. I don’t think a Horus reticle is worth the extra 400 bucks you’ll pay for it.

I can completely understand your predicament of being relatively new to the sport and wearing readers or something to dial. I've tried tree reticles, and Horus. I've gone back to a simpler type similar to the old EBR-1 and original SKMR.
I've found the simpler, the less distracting with everything else going on while trying to shoot a stage.

I like the horus, well I like the floating dot ;)

I did add it in my post and a few of you have about being a new shooter. I am a experience shooter and have been to many competitions. I live in Missouri and we don't have the wind they do out west. I have been using a LR17 with a GAP reticle since 2012. I have tried a DMR 2 with a G3 reticle. Didn't care much for the reticle and glass quality compared to the LR17.

There's a pretty significant difference in glass between the DMR2 and the DMR2 Pro or XRS2.

I enjoy the older SKMR2 reticle from Kahles, but it too needs some work. The Horus is entirely too busy, but the modified ones work very well. I had a no dial stage on my last competition and using the SKMR2 worked very well for the application. All reticle's will have the pros and cons. For example, SKMR2 doesn't have any good hold offs before it hits 2 mils, and that can be a problem if you're trying to hold windage and a slight elevation adjustment, say .3 mils up and .4 mils left. On the plus, supposedly pure normal crosshairs are easier to see under NODs.

Horus on the other hand

+1 for the SKMR3. I was dead-set on the Kahles AMR until someone set me straight. Reticles similar to the SKMR3 will have plenty of hold points without being too busy to see through.

what did the person who set you straight say about the AMR?
i shot the AMR for several years and that is hands down my favorite reticle.

He told me, after I explained how I was using the gun, that a less cluttered reticle would suit me best. He had had the AMR and thought it was hard to spot impacts at greater distances. I tend to dial a lot more than hold (although I do both), plus I liked the SKMR3's center dot a lot better. I've since gotten another scope that has a bit more cluttered reticle and it made me happy I picked the SKMR3.

I will say that if you holdover more than dial, a AMR/Horus reticle is better IF you can spot the impacts. Otherwise, if you aren't using them, they are sort of worthless.

Reticles are largely use driven. I like the tremor 3 for longer range work but prefer something simpler on my SPR's where a simpler bolder reticle makes short and medium range engagements easier and quicker.

Although I have my own thoughts on how a .2 mil reticle should look, which is different than the H style is, and an improvement in my eyes, I still had great success here in AZ using the H59 using mostly holdovers and holdoffs in a long range steel course. Enough so that i won the series two consecutive years.

I'm not so good at PRS centerfire anymore but have won some NRL22 matches with the H59, excelling on the holdover stages.

Out west in our dry climate it's not hard to see your misses in the dirt if your vision is decent and obviously was unhindered in self spotting.

Not that I don't like some of the new .2 mil reticles. Especially prefering the tree in the ZCO. It's a winner.

It's funny to me how people think the H reticles are so much busier than a .2 mil tree reticle???

And why would anyone tolerate possibly aiming through a line number .5 to .7 mil off the vertical crosshair but whatever.

There's definitely some not so well thought out reticles out there IMO which are falling behind most of the H reticles.
