I am new to the 1000 yard concept and I want to build a rifle that is capable of shooting beyond that distance with the right training. I am taking long range shooting classes and have the training to do this but I just don't really have a idea of where to start on a build like this. I want to use a Krieger barrel and thats all I really know about it. So any help would be appreciated.

Re: Rifle Build for New LR Shooter

There are plenty of factory bolt guns capable of doing such. I would recomend cutting your teeth on one of them first and shooting....a lot. Then, after you become pretty proficiant and learn more you'll learn more of the needs and more of the wants in a custom build.

Just my 2 cents...

Re: Rifle Build for New LR Shooter

so the only thing you know is that you want to use a Krieger barrel...

hmm... ok...

why krieger? I'm curious...

no budget, nothing? sky is the limit?

Re: Rifle Build for New LR Shooter

Nope I really don't have a budget of that much. I mean ive just heard great things about krieger barrels and have shot them and if you think there is a better barrel for example like broughton barrels then tell me about them because I want to use the best materials out their. So just tell me yalls thoughts on what stock I should use and barrel and scope. It would be very appreciated.

Re: Rifle Build for New LR Shooter

I'm no expert on the subject but it is better to just buy a Remington clone than to rebuild a factory 700 action. Figure about $2000 if done right going that route.

Get a factory varmint rifle to shoot 1/2 MOA and wear it out first.

Practice a lot at 200 yards with a .22LR set up for that purpose.

Well said. maybe spend some money on some good glass then spend your money on ammo and practice. When you are ready for a custom build you will know much more about what you want and you can just move your glass to the new rifle.

Re: Rifle Build for New LR Shooter

Agreement here. I know most everyone here is .308 minded for first guns...but with your aspirations I'd really look at a 6.5x55 in a Rem or Savage. Barrel life decent, accurate cartridge, excellent long range ballistics. JMHO

Re: Rifle Build for New LR Shooter

These days, all you really need is the proper model offering from a good manufacturer and put a scope on it. Odds are that you'll be the limiting factor in terms of accuracy. Two of the more popular manufacturers are Remington and Savage.

Well to be fair, Krieger does make really nice barrels. Also, they were featured in "Sons of Gun", which probably drew some attention.
