Howdy all,
New to the forums and was hoping to begin shooting some matches in 2020.
I presently have a Ruger PR in 6.5 Creedmoor and hope that someone can point me to the class a beginner with
such a rifle would be looking at.

Also, is there a chart or spreadsheet that might have the type of rifle to class information on it?

Thank you for any advice!

Merry Christmas,
Greg

are you willing to travel ? not sure what is offered in your state but mile high https://www.milehighshooting.com/ has courses , k&m https://kmprecisionrifletraining.com/ if that is project apple seed https://appleseedinfo.org/ sounds good depending on your area cmp http://thecmp.org/ you could always check them out they also offer discounts firearms always a good thing to have more of if that is something that grabs you . Frank from this forum runs classes , I would guess depending on what you want out of it you can decide or read about or call and find out more what ever you do or don't do good luck and much fun merry Christmas .

Think he's talking about divisions. Look for precision rifle series and rules. Generally if rifle and scope are each msrp below $2k, with no to limited mods, they have a production division.

as noted above, show up with what you have, they'll put you in the appropriate division. let them know you're new and they'll generally let you go last so you can see what folks are doing. and i'm sure most everyone will let you use their gear (bags, tripod, etc) as needed.

Sounds great! Is there anything I should be sure to have? I am coming from clay target sports so safety equipment is no issue, but anything that you all can think of would be welcomed.
Thank you for the replies so far, and I look forward to this new endeavor!

Rifle, ammo, and data are the three things you need. Make sure to have at least two 10 round mags. Three are better. You can borrow bags for shooting off if needed or bring some. If you wanted to buy one then get a Game Changer. Bring a small pack to carry ammo and comfort gear for environment and also snacks and water. Go have fun.

yes on data. you need to chrono your gun/load (don't just use the speed off the ammo box). you plug that, your bullet's ballistic coefficient and some other data into a ballistics program (i use 'shooter' on my phone, $10) and that will tell you your drops and windage at various yardages. better yet if you can hit a range and verify where you actually hit at various yardages (that's called your 'dope.') know how to use your scope's reticle to hold over at various distances, and also know how to dial your elevation knob for various distances. as an example, you might have a couple of targets on a stage at let's say 10, 11, 12 & 13 moa (or mils or whatever). you'd generally dial 10 before starting the stage, then hold dead on for first target, hold one over for 2nd, etc etc.

don't get too worked up, again just let folks know you're new and everyone will help you out.

If shooting Hornady ammo or bullets or others in their library, Hornady 4Dof is super accurate and free online or as an app.

Another thing you could do if possible let the Match Director know in advance that you are new, they maybe able to sqaud you with other shooter who enjoy teaching new shooters. Don't get me wrong I'd say 95% of the PRS shooter are always helpful, but some go the extra distance. Most important, learn, have fun make some great friends.

Chamber flag also very important. Pay close attention to the safety rules people respect that. I'm still pretty new at it. It took awhile but the last few matches I shot things been coming together. It was a steep learning curve for me as for most people at first. I have seen people talk a real good game their first time, then the magic words " on the beep" show something way different. Its really about learning a shooting skill. I have seen pros shoot lights out with clean barrels while fire forming brass. Guys that show up with their hunting rifle and do quite well never heard of a SD and hope they never catch one. Guys talking about their new powder throw measuring powder to .01 of a grain then watching them shoot they would have done just as well with a powder scoop. Use what you got and have fun its a blast.
