I know that Federal 210 and CCI BR2 are what most people use but is there any reason that I cannont load Wincheser Large Rifle (WRL) Primers for .308? I will be running them through a 700P and a few AR-10s. Thanks

Re: Rifle Primer concern for .308Win

Thanks, I was just concerned because I heard from a someone who shoots alot of highpower matches that he does not recommend Winchester Small Rifle primers for AR-15's. Not sure why. So natrualy I was concerned about using WRL in AR-10's.

BS on the Win small rifle primers in a AR, I have used 3k of them with no problems, I even came in 7th at my first 3gun match using them.

I am new to reloading and trying to soak up all teh info. I am loading ar 15 rounds using Winchcester Sm rifle primers some go in and others dont. Is this normal or do you have a high sucess with installng all your primers. out of 150 i distroyed like 15-20. is this normal.

sounds like you are using mil brass and di not get all the primer crimp out of the hole? if that is the case, you need the proper tool to remove the crimp and you should be gtg. be careful loading mil spec brass. do your homework and pay attention or shit gets blown up.

Re: Rifle Primer concern for .308Win

Are you cleaning out your primer pockets with a uniformer before trying to jam a new primer in there?

Re: Rifle Primer concern for .308Win

WLR primers are pretty good. Right now I'm out of BR-2's, and thats all I have laying around. Not going to pay what some of those asshole deales want for primers. I just got done loading 1000 match loads with WLR primers( I do A LOT of shooting). I did notice that POI was a little higher with the WLR than my BR-2 loads.

Yes i use a primer pocket tool and lean out the pocket and flash hole. I use a Rcbs universal primer tool and sometimes i just dont get them in. I did however just make 50 508 and only damaged one so my perentage is improving.

thanks for the help i will look for mil brass and see if that helps

Forgive me if I missed it but you may not have acknowedged what was suggested; it isn't insufficient cleaning of the primer pockets, it is a crimp near the rim of the pocket that must be swaged smooth or cut off before you can insert new primers. This is the reason you are destroying primers.

Military brass, and some non-mil, comes with crimped primers.

There are several methods for removing that crimp that range from relatively inexpensive reamers that take little time (but are inefficient for large batches) to the Cadillac of swagers: the Dillon 600!

K, you want to make double damn sure your primers are below flush!

Buddy of mine was telling me a story yesterday. He's a HP shooter.

Guy had a really nice AR built to shoot matches, loaded up his ammo and showed up at a match to shoot. My friend was on the line next to him. They were shooting out of the prone.

My bud is laying there, shooting his string and from his left a big BOOM! Out of battery detonation from a primer that wasn't seated below flush. Destroyed the guys brand new match rifle.

The suggestions about the Dillon Swage tool is a good one if you have brass with crimped primers.

Hope that helps.
