Does anyone make a rifle rest that secures onto the standard base of a spotter tripod? I have a short high quality tripod and wanted to test it against my bipod. The tripod is more rigid than my bipod, so thought I'd give it a try.

Get with Danel Jenkins at Precision Rifle Solutions. Several folks here, me included, have been using Danel's tripods and cradles for a long time and they are excellent products for a very reasonable price. Danel offers two different size cradles depending on what rifles you plan to use with them...both attach via a standard 1/4x20 tripod thread. Here you go:

I made one:
- Bent some scrap AL
- Closed cell sleeping pad
- Duct tape
- 550 cord loop so I can carabiner it to gear
- Tripod Shoe
Took like all of 45 minutes and cost $20 for the tri pod shoe

ETA if you really want something that is rock solid stable on a tripod you need something that anchors the gun. Otherwise it is really just a saddle (rest) for when you can not use your bi pod to do the same.
If you want stable, consider the DCLW from Cheese here on the board.

Thanks for the info. I like the PRS but want to make sure the concept works for me before I pour money into it. Soooo, I had a Caldwell benchrest laying around. I took the cradle off it, drilled it out and bolted it to the tripod (3/8" thread on the tripod). Worked great during dry fire, will see how it does at the range next weekend.

I have a short and a medium tripod from Danel at PRS with interchangable rifle rest and binoculars platform. I carry both in with my shooting gear and use them for either a rifle rest or spotting binocs rangefinder depending on shooting position, etc.

That's funny!! I did the exact same thing with one of the older, 100% plastic/polymer Caldwell/Midway units before I bought one of Danel's tripods/cradles. The problem with the Caldwell unit is that it isn't worth a damn for anything more than light use because of the flimsyness of the materials used. It should work "ok" at the range just so that you can get a "feel" for how a tripod shooting cradle might work, but the first time it takes a good thump from moving it around or gets torqued akawardly in your pack or vehicle...the cradle will break off.

Plus one for PRS. If you get a couple of quick connects you can switch out your gear between pods.
I switch out my wind meter, spoting scope, gun rest and chrono screen on the go. When packing I only bring one pod.

You can't go wrong with the PRS system, making hits at distance from the standing using the tripod and cradle makes it look easy. Great product and great customer service!!
