I just became to proud owner of a Savage Arms 10BA .308 I put my Leupold 3-9x50 VX2 on it as a temp scope. I would like to get something in the 24x or higher group. What scopes can u guys recommend to me? I have been looking at the Nikon Monarchs 6-24x50 and the 8-32x50. I would like to stay in the 50mm size. Brother in law mentioned somethng about Barska. I have a NcStar on my AR15 and i really like it.. Any suggestions

Thanks

Re: Rifle Scope advice

Spend as much as you can afford. Every time I have gone cheaper I have gone back and got what I wanted. You might want to look at bushnell they make some nice glass in that price range.

Re: Rifle Scope advice

Don't know what your plans are for the gun but if you're gonna be hunting varmints at distance and possibly some matches even out to 1000 yards you really don't need any higher than 20x although 24x is nice as long as it's clear. Get much above 24x and the mirage and darkness start to be a factor.

You might check out the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 SFP. It's illuminated although I've never had a need to use mine it's what comes with it. Reasonable but maybe just a tad more than the Nikon but I think it's a much better scope for the money.

Re: Rifle Scope advice

You don't need that much magnification for <500 yards. I'd say go with something like a Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 for around $500 or a Weaver 3-15x50 for around $730. Look at some of the Bushnells, as well. Bushnell has a very nice 6-24x50 if you still want the magnification.

Re: Rifle Scope advice

Since you are talking about target shooting, you are going to want the higher powers to your gnats ass pin points you will probably be after. Stick with the Vortex PST 6-24...

You can come back and thank me later!!

Besides, you won't use 24x much unless you shoot a lot of paper at 100 yards during broad daylight in cold weather.

Re: Rifle Scope advice

Barska is bottom of the barrel.

I'd take the VX-II over the Baraska.

The lower the budget, the lower the magnification you should be looking at.

Like Graham said above, high magnification is only worth owning if its a higher-end scope. Most situations you can't use it anyway. I shot a match yesterday that was the first time since Feb I could crank up all the way. I was running a 5-25x Bender in 70% humidity, 60*F and virtually no wind. I cranked it up to spot my shots on paper. I still did my shooting on about 12x.
