My 10 year old son and myself went to our first F/TR match at our local club this weekend. He was going to watch and I was going to shoot. Well, someone volunteered a spare .223 and he shot, and did well. He actually beat 3 or 4 adults. What are some suggestions for a good rifle for him to start with? He can shoot a 308, but not 40-60 times so it will be limited to a .223.

The Savage 12FCV .223 will do what he needs. If cost is less of a factor, go with the 12F-T/R .223. Both of these rifles will serve him for a lifetime. I would be less concerned with Length of Pull considering how well he did with a borrowed gun. Better for him to start with and grow into the rifle he will be using indefinitely.
Remember, with the Savage rifles, a barrel and bolt head change will put him into many of the short action chamberings; .308 for F-T/R and .260 Rem for F-Open. My original 10FP has been a .260, a .308, a .260 with a custom 28" barrel, and is currently under conversion to .30BR.

+1 on that. The .223 with a 30" barrel gives away virtually nothing to a .308 at 600 meters and less.

A Savage will give him endless possibilities down the road, and is competitive with factory barrel right out of the box. Upgrade later to custom aftermarket barrel and you still don't have an "arm and leg" in the setup, considering you just need a barrel nut wrench and a "go gauge" in the new caliber.

I bet you would find he could shoot something like the Savage 12 Long Range Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor / 260 Remington without any issues. The gun weighs 12.5 lbs with a scope. I have one and the gun barely moves.

For the price and out of the box accuracy, you can't beat the Savage.

Unfortunately, this does not qualify for FTR. Only .223 and .308 caliber do.
