http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/showthread.php?t=80872&highlight=effects+temperature+ammo in short, at least in my experience, weight sorting has a better payoff at longer distances 75 yards through 200 and beyond, while rim thickness sorting seems to be a better thing to do if you are closer in under 75 yards. it just seems the unifying the weight has a overtakes rim thickness on group size when shooting groups further out with bulk walmart ammo, mid gade ammos like cci std vel, and match ammo like SK and Wolf.
ammo lubing seems to be the thing to do whether you weight sort or rim sort. i did both rim and weight sort ammo lot which really helped out but took so much time to do and produced such a small lot of ammo once i weeded out the best lot that you'ld probably just be better off buying top shelf ammo where the lots produced are pretty much tight tolerences from round to round like Eley & Lapua top shelf stuff.
then i had seperate lots that i used for short range (rim sorted) and long range (weight sorted). between that and keeping multiple dopes for multiple rifles it became a logistical nightmare keeping everything straight and sucked the fun right out of it, so anymore i just weight sort and lube.
there was another good post on using contricity somewhere here which seemed to have credence to it, but as not having a contricity guage i can't attest anything to that topic.
so my routine is:
get several bricks of different ammo
see what works the best out of your rifle
buy a whole bunch of it
weight sort and label
lube 'em
keep them a steady temp as much as i can at the firing line
then shoot
of course there is exception to every rule, but those are the results of what i've tinkered with to get the best out of what i have.
