im looking for a rimfire to start a kid out on. my only requirments are it needs to be a bolt action (i dont want to get the kid usto semi auto and just throwing ammo out) and it has to be mag fed (i want to buy lots of mags to make range time easier on me)

also i want somthing that when the kid gets good he can have a 22 that is accurate and can be upgraded to his desires.

im thinking 541 or 452 what do you guys think. does anyone make a short stock or extreamly adjustable stock for as the kid grows

Re: rimfire for a kid

CZ 452 Scout

or

Savage Mark II.

Both are inexpensive but excellent bolt guns. CZ comes with open sights so he can master them before moving up to a scope.

How much are you looking to spend. You can buy the walmart savages for real cheap, you can buy mags from savage for a very reasonable price, and if he sticks with shooting when he gets larger the gun is cheap enough that you won't feel bad about buying him something nicer and setting the old one in the corner. The $100 walmart savages are more accurate then just about any kid and most adults as well.

im looking to spend 500 pre optic when the time comes for optic so my options are open. i looked and i was thinking 452 scout before reading the replys buds has them for less than 300 so ill probably go that route, thanks folks

Re: rimfire for a kid

I'd say Savage just from the standpoint that it will probably get beat up, you won't feel so bad when it does. A Ruger 77/22 is outrageous in price and I really despise the scope mount. My first two long guns were a used single shot .410 bought for $15 and a used Western Auto single shot .22 bought for $10. It was missing a trigger guard. I refinished both guns, built a new trigger guard (in high school shop class, oh the horror) and still have both of them. Might also consider a Henry lever action, save on mags with the tube feed.

Re: rimfire for a kid

How old is your kid.

The CZ 452 scout is a great gun. I wanted something smaller for my kids to start off with, so I recently purchased a Thompson Hot Shot .22. It is light, short, and easy to operate.

I plan on purchasing a CZ scout when my oldest is a little bigger.

Re: rimfire for a kid

the kid is 2 now so i have time. his father is not a gun guy but gavve me the go ahead to teach his son about guns if i wanted to finance it. imo stuff like this is much more valuabable than paying nra or whatever dues.

im thinking 452 scout will be perfect. i can leave it open sighted until the kid gets the irons down then add a scope. i looked at the cricckets and it seams he will outgrow that fairly soon so i dont want to go that route
