I am looking at buying at .22 semi to shoot with and have it narrowed down to several choices.

1.SW M&P 15-22
2.GSG-5
3.Sig 522

They all look and feel well built and have fairly good reviews. What do you fellas who have exposure to one or all think about them?

THanks

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

The only one of the three I've fired was the S&W. I liked it a lot and have been convincing myself that I don't need one. Other than being a tad light the only down side I can see is you can't switch out stocks, forearms, etc. If I didn't have a conversion for my AR I'd probably pick one up.

The GSG's and the Sig both look really neat but I haven't handled or shot one.

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

Forgot to mention, the S&W I shot came threaded too. I know my buddy runs a can on it but don't remember what sub-sonics he uses. My 10/22's for example, will run the 40gr Aguilla ss but not some of the others I've tried.

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

I have the S&W 15-22 and the thing is a blast to shoot. I did get one of the first one and had the extractor break. Called Smith they issued a call tag and had the rifle back a week later w/ an extra magazine which was nice. I also had the load assist button break and they sent me one right out. I haven't had time to shoot it since I got it back my Savage TR has been getting all my attention.

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

Why not go for the whole hog and get an AR-15 with a .22 upper, or a drop in conversion set ??

Depending on set-up, it can give you the C/F possibilities as well, and the versatility that comes with that. Not as cheap, but a bit more interesting, at least in my book...

You can change out the stock and grip on the S&W 22.

Since it doesn't have a buffer tube aren't you limited to just another col. stock? In other words most I was thinking you can't put a fixed stock on it.

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

Not sure on the fixed stock option and to be honest I also can't remember if I used a mil-spec or commercial tube Magpul stock on it.... not much help am I...

Could you possibly post a review, with pics of your Spikes. Been thinking about getting one. Thanks, ADT.

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

I own a 522 and it's accurate and reliable. Now have over 1K rounds of crappy remmy bulk through it with out a single problem. Another plus is the Black Dog mags work in my Ceiner conversion on my M16A1. Where the Colt and S&W mags are proprietary and donot.

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

I just bought a S&W MP15-22 to shoot with my son. It's lighter than the GSG5 and, so far, has been a lot of fun. I have shot one that I rented from a range and my own. The rented one jammed a lot, but the one I bought has run really well.

Re: Rimfire Purchase?

Hi! I think this is my first post.

I've been a 10/22 owner for years. I think I bought mine 24 years ago. Hasn't been used much, but I got back into shooting after being busy.

Picked up M&P15-22's for my kids for Christmas. The operation of the M&P is so so similar to my AR that it is a great training opportunity for younger, or even older, shooters. Stock triggers on my AR (Superior Arms) and our M&P15-22's function, feel and sound almost identically.

Compared to my 10/22?

I put Tech Sights on my 10/22 earlier this year, and it really changed what I thought about my 10/22. So much easier to be consistent. I had the narrower match post on the front of my 10/22 Tech Sights, and, as a result, I put some of those National Match Posts on both M&P's. Helped with our accuracy on the M&P's, but both of my boys and I seem to shoot better groups with the 10/22.

We experiemented by moving the front and rear OEM sights on the M&P out a little further away from each other. Rear sight hangs over the charging handle and the front sight hangs out over the front of the front hand guard. I think the three of us thought that it helped with our accuracy. Need to put some more rounds down range on that, but the distance between the M&P sights and the Tech Sights on the 10/22 is different, with the M&P being shorter.

I understand that one can change triggers on the M&P with other AR spec triggers.

I like the look and the function of the M&P. I've had great success mechanically with both. I'd like to have some of the shorter 10 round magazines that were originally available as the long 25 round mags make it a little cumbersome when shooting off a bench or prone.

My 10/22 has a Tapco stock and the Tech sights. Given the total cost of those items compared to some of the M&P and some of the other sportier plinkers, it is very hard to argue against a 10/22.

Would I buy the M&P's again? Yes. It is a nice platform with the functionality of the rails, the similar operation of a full size AR, and it's about the same cost as some AR conversions.

Only idea that I'm thinking about is removing the handguard rail mounted sight and replacing it with something like a gas tube folding front sight. Something along this line.
