I don’t mean for this to sound like a dumb question but what is the difference between the various ring and base options? I know the "good" ones cost more. Some are 1 piece systems and others are 1 piece base or 2 piece base with a whole assortment of ring options. Some cost less than $50 and some cost as much as $250 for the base and ring setup. Is there really that much difference between a $50-$60 setup and a $250 setup?

I have a Remington 700 308, so short action, and I am getting a new 6 x 24 x 50 30mm tube scope. I plan to eventually shoot out to 1000 yards. The scope has 50moa up and 50moa down internal adjustment (so the scope maker says). Would I still need a 20moa base?

My current rifle has (the old scope) 6.5 x 20 x 50 VXIII LRT Leupold Scope with $30 Leupold base and $30 Leupold rings. I just want to see if there is a real need to go to something better for the new scope.

Re: Rings and Mounts question

What's the new scope? Just curious.

If it has the 50 up and 50 down, why wouldn't you take advantage of the full elevation or at least most of it. I'd get a 20moa base at least, maybe 30moa.

You may not need to go $250+, but there is an advantage of having good equipment, the best scope in the world is worthless if it's not being held true.

Yes; quality, fit, finish. I recomend Seekins and Badger fo my 1st choice, TPS is a less expensive option. Buy once

Yes, you will want a 20moa base. 50moa will get you to 1000 yards, but you dont know how much elevation you will eat up zeroing your rifle.

Re: Rings and Mounts question

There are a ton of options. Look at a seekins picatinny rail and 30mm rings. Call and make sure that your getting rings in the correct height for your scope. A couple hundred bucks is not too much to spend on something as important as your scope. You'll be very happy that you invested in quality. See link

Re: Rings and Mounts question

I don't want to make this thread about the scope, I know your question was rings. However, the two do play together. No, I wouldn't spend $250-$300 for base/rings for a $400 scope. I've never heard of Explore Optics before you posted that link. What's wrong with the Leupy you've got now?

For the Explore Optics I would likely use Burris XTR stuff, you'll be in to the base and rings under $100 I believe.

However, unless you've heard a lot more than I have, I'd strongly recommend staying away from Explore. These unheard of brands rarely have the quality and tracking (click quality) that is going to let you shoot accurately to 1k. Look into something like a Bushnell tactical, super sniper, Vortex, etc.

I'll be happy to learn if you've got any reviews on the Explore, but I'm hesitant for sure.
