Rl-15 and 168 Hornady A-max

Re: Rl-15 and 168 Hornady A-max

My good friend shoots that in his .308.

I'm pretty sure it's:
Lapua Brass
44.0gr R-15
CCIBR2
168 A-max at 2.800

I'm going off memory so double check the charge weight...

Sounds close.I am using some OFB military so I will back it off a bit, like 43 grains.load a few and see..I tried 40 and my M-1A cycled fine but I am looking to reload a stash.

My 168gr. A-Max load:

with 22" Rock m24(11:25) R5 Bbl.

hope this helps.

For an M1A using mil brass I think 40 grains is getting close to the edge of a compressed load and pressure. I think maybe RL-15 is not the best powder to use for this weapon if you want to get higher velocity out of it without hurting the rifle or more importantly yourself. Have you looked at IMR4895 or Winchester 748 both should get you to about 2,600FPS and still not be too hot for your gas gun.

HTH!

That's my exact load except I'm at 44.2 rl15 shoots one ragged hole out of my rifle. I've tried different bullets and different powders, but I haven't been able to top the accuracy of it.

Re: Rl-15 and 168 Hornady A-max

FWIW YAOG Has a very good point. The M1A isnt a bolt action and Bolt action loads do not apply to a gas gun. I just put 40.5 grs of Imr4895 in Lake City brass and PMJ brass with a 168 gr AMax winchester primers this weekend., and it was right on in my NMM1a.

According to my Hornady manual 2500 fps is tops and my load was about 2500-2520 fps. I'm holding up there since it's about where the manual says I should be. Yeah I know the manuals load light but why mess up a $2300 rifle. Besides its shooting excellent groups at 200 it's holding 10 ring and less on a 200 yrd National Match target. That's what it was made to do.

Oh my oal was 2.800
