Road Tripping from TX to Montana VIA AZ and CA....

This may seem insane to some of you but instead of going to the caribbean this year while I am home from Iraq me and the wife have been considering doing a road trip of sorts to see America and its beauty and whatever else there is out there.

We are sort of planning on a big loop that starts in DFW TX. Heading out west to the Grand Canyon. Then either up through Nevada to Vegas and on towards Yellowstone. The reason CA is in the mix is I have a cousin who is a Gunny in the Marines and he just returned back from Afg. Thought about driving out to San Diego to see him a couple days then on to Vegas or have them meet us in Vegas. Anyway the Dilemma I am having is Guns and Laws. #1 Guns and California....

According to this it is now legal to open carry or posses a loaded firearm in a national park. reference to guns in a park

I don't wish to actually carry the weapon but staying in hotels. We usually stay in nice hotels but you just never know these days. The problem I have with this whole ordeal is CA. I know someone posted a link the other day about a national law that covers having a weapon in the car unloaded and stowed as long as you are passing through that state. Would this cover CA?

Anyone have any internet insight to this?

Also Anyone know anything else cool to see based on where I am headed off to?

Poke, I posted that link. If you are planning on staying the night in whichever state you are in then you would fall under that State's respective laws regarding firearms also you would be subject to that States restricted firearms list. This link about sums it up. Hope you find this useful

If you jave the time go to Flagstaff Az, then head south on 89A thru Oak Creek canyou, Sedona, Prescott. At Presctt 89 to 71/60 and out to Quartzite . At Quartzite head S on 95 to Y9uma. At Yuma pick up I-8 into San Diego. Then north on I-5 thru La and onto Califnia 1/101 the coastal road.

On that route youll go from 7000 feet in the mts in Flagstaff thru beautiful canyons and then thru some of the most desolate j and beautiful terrain on earth. Then up the stunning Pacific coast. That route never fails to leave me in awe.

If you want a bit more be sure to include the Grand Canyon, and Yosimite National Parks.

If you end up in Vegas make sure to check out the Hoover Dam while you're there. Also the Grand Canyon is a must. For about 600 bucks you can go on a tour of the Bottom of the canyon. You'll be flown in on a small plane and once there you'll visit a small cattle ranch called Bar Ten. From there you'll hop on ATVs for about 3 hours exploring the bottom of the Grand Canyon. A definate good time.

You can't go wrong anywhere in Yellowstone. Truly one of God's greatest creations. If you go to Yellowstone make sure you stop and see the Grand Tetons. It's the stuff that they use to make post cards.

Any Jeep Trails in the canyon, tetons, or Yellowstone? Would be willing to trailer the Wrangler out to do some real off the road type trails. Would love to drive it out but momma isnt a fan of it...

I live in bozeman Montana just north of yellowstone, I also have a wrangler. There are plenty of forest service roads to head up, some more challenging than others. I love hitting trails in the summer and fishing high mountain lakes. But I wouldn't think of the area as a 4x4 destination in my opinion.

Pretty much all of yellowstone is driveable in any vehicle so that isn't really a issue there. I'm down around Jackson hole by the tetons this weekend, and it looks like there are some good summer trails here but the high country is still five feet deep on snow so I can't do any exploring myself.

Don't know of any of this helps...

Everyone should do the Grand Canyon once! Goldie has a great suggestion and going through Oak Creek Canyon and hitting Sedona. Some of the prettiest country through there. Above all I would say have a safe trip regardless of your routes!

Forget the jeep and just enjoy the scenery. If you can spend the time, WALK to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Ive done it and its an experience youll keep with you for a lifetime. Dont do like I did at 21 and do the whole walk in 24 hours flat. You should take a day on descent, a day at the bottom, and 2 days to ascend Its 7 miles each way and over a mile in elevation change. It was about 40 degress on the rim when I left at 5 am, and 105 when I got to the bottom, so take plenty of water.

Sounds like a fun trip. While you are in LA, you might drive Angeles Crest highway and the turn off on angeles crest national forest drive and take that to the high dessert and then come back again - its a beautifull drive, and a ton of fun in anything remotely sporty.

Death Valley is also interesting to drive through, although its not that hot this time of year.

Yosemite is a must. If you have time, drive the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) up from L.A. to the Bay Area. It goes right into San Francisco. Some of the most breathtaking views in the country.

On this road you can stop in Monterey, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, 17mile drive, etc.

Remember that when driving through CA, your hangun MUST be in a locked container (glovebox doesn't count) with the ammunition stored separately.
