I have this Rock Sopmod bipod and the aluminum on the base is being eaten away fast. I maybe have 200 rounds through this gun with this bipod and it is destroying the bipod. The gun is a 308 so recoil is of no issue. Is this normal for these bipods to do this and is there anything I can to to limit the harm I am getting.

Re: Rock Sopmod Bipod Help

Looks like a wrong "guess" on material selection by the designer....that is amazing.
Get your money back if you bought it from the company,it will only get worse as Hardcoat is generally only .001-.003 thick per surface and by the photo, that has been well exceded.

If they even hardcoated it to start with....

Re: Rock Sopmod Bipod Help

I took a very close look at the Sopmod when Mike first told me about it.
I don't think the bipods that I had were Type3 hard coat at all.
The wear spots were very apparent and immediate.
I'm no Metallurgist but....they should have been made in at least 6061 T-6 with a solid 3 Microns of Type3 hard coat.

Send it back and get a new one or your money back and move on.

Re: Rock Sopmod Bipod Help

Aluminium is just plain "the wrong" material for that application.....

If the ops pic is telling the story and the material is indeed Al Aly ( shown gouged) being contacted by steel or S.S. under impact type forces with small surface area contact.
