Well I received a goody box in the mail on Friday from Roedale Precision in Germany.
In the box was the new parts for my Tikka T3 Lite...will work with all the short action CALIBERS. This included bottom metal, bolt handle, bolt shroud, screws, and new bolt stop.
Ok...so I take my Tikka apart and start putting all the new parts on it. The bolt shroud and bolt handle are VERY SIMPLE...30 sec. to install them.
I had a bolt shroud from Australia and a bolt handle from Kit here on the hide. Both are quality items, but I just wanted to give Pete's products a try. Very high quality. The bolt handle is one piece and very beefy.
Ok...the bottom metal. Please note that this is NOT a drop in fit product. And access to a mill will simplify installation. It can be done with a Dremal and thats how I did it, but a mill will make it faster and cleaner looking on the INSIDE of the stock.
Once I hog out a bunch of the inside of the stock, the bottom metal fit nice and flush with the stock and the color matches it very nicely.
Next the mag catch needed to be filed down and smoothed out a bit. It was VERY sharp and held the mag a bit to high in the receiver. Making it very tight and hard to operate the mag release.
Now my rifle is a .223 and I am using AI mags. The feed lips are thicker then then metal mags and wont seat into the receiver. So I took the rifle over to my friends and he used his mill to open up the bottom a bit to accommodate the mags.
Please note that is you are using a caliber that uses the .308 mags this is NOT a problem and you will not have to do any work to the receiver.
So...after a few hours work I had the rifle back together and at the range.
The rifle feeds flawlessly and having the extra rounds available is handy. And...I think it makes the rifle look very tacti-kool! Plus now I can run longer, heavier bullets and seat them long to take advantage of the 1:8 twist barrel. The AI mags allow much longer seating depth then the factory Tikka .223 mags.
Pete is a great guy to deal with and I would recommend these parts to anyone who does not like the stock mag system on their Tikka T3 and want something a little more robust. The bolt shroud and handle are so easy a caveman...oh wait...that ones been used!
Here are some pics...sorry for the quality.
Take care,Stan
PS...thanks to Steve at Triad for hooking me up with the .223 AI mags. Another great gent to deal with!
