I'm sure that this is a repost but I have some more specific needs. I am just getting started in the "tactical/sniper" style shooting. I've been shooting for quite some time and have wanted to be a marine scout sniper even longer. I realized that I want to get prepared in anyway possible so I started looking around and unearthed the "realm" of the tactical shooter. So back to my main point I need gear and perferrably similar to
what the marines use. Any suggestions? Perhaps a list of basic items?

Re: Rookie needs some gear

How old are you bud,if old enough just join the Corps.They will get you squared away.Then if you truly want to be a Scout Sniper enough you can get there.

If you are still too young to join then,the best thing you can do to prepare is to be in good physical shape.There's not a whole lot you can do to be prepared other than that,the Marines are going to teach you to shoot their way and any habits that you develop now will have to be unlearned.

Re: Rookie needs some gear

Don't get me wrong...Military snipers are some of the best in the world, but...

A civilian tactical marksman (or ever a LEO) would seriously hanicap themselves by limiting thier gear to what the Militasry is stuck with.

We need to know where you are at now...do you have the rifle set up? What are the exact types of shooting you are interested in? Long Range...F-Class...NRA High-Power...Paper...Steel...Competition or Just your buds?

Re: Rookie needs some gear

I see that you are in So Cal. Ring me up and I can take you up to the range and let you go at shooting at our 600 yard range or even out 1 k. The first thing you start with is a decent rifle and then get the goodies that fits your needs and function. The only way to get good is to have range time. Once you have mastered this then you can use these skills to the field.

If you don't have any yet, I'd definitely buy some: Honor, Courage and Commitment.

Re: Rookie needs some gear

Good advice above.

There really isn't a lot you can do to prepare for the training or selection process other than be physically fit and mentally strong. Most of the tools you need for the mental portion will be demonstrated to you in Boot.

If you want to get into LR shooting, then don't worry about what the Corps uses. Just get a solid rig and a mess of ammo.

Re: Rookie needs some gear

Hook up for the online training here and learn to properly shoot. These skills will transfer into the place that your goals and reality collide. If you do join up and somehow make it into sniper school, you will be way ahead if your shooting skills are automatic.

As for gear, look to the example of Hathcock. A rifle, a scope, a canteen and a handful of crackers. Your skills will lead you to the right gear at the right time.

come on. You know that won't matter. Especially when it's karoke night at the O-club.

besides snipin' is just about shootin' cool guns. FAC/FO or other recon skills just aren't cool enough.

Re: Rookie needs some gear

thanks for the advice guys. i am at the head of my class and i did play football and i sprint/throw in track plus i do a lot on my own time so i am in faorly good shape. i was a boyscout so i have the general leadership traits and mind set. my shooting coach was is an old WW2 gunny who also coaches some olympic shooters (i hope the marine corp hasnt changed thier shooting methods too much). unfortunately i am not yet old enough to serve my country but itching to get in. so how about just some basic gear (not necessarily military)?

Re: Rookie needs some gear

A decent rifle(accuracy-wise), a quality optic or sights, a good leather shooting sling, a small pick-up truck full of ammo, 3(minimum)days a week at the shooting range, shooters log, targets, calculator .... that should get you started....check back after you burn up at least 1k rounds.

Re: Rookie needs some gear

Youngsmith;
Koganinja seems willing to take you to the range to use his equipment. I suspect you will learn more in an afternoon behind a scope than a year asking questions of a group of forum snipers.
Best wishes in your attempts to serve your country as a scout sniper.

Re: Rookie needs some gear

As stated above a good trip to the range (or several) would be a great start. Spending money before you have a good knowledge base of what you want to shoot and whats out there could have you spending money foolishly. Don't get caught up in whats tacticool, a good remington 700 with quality glass is a great start. A good supply of ammo is going to be a never ending expense so learning all the fundamentals in the training section on positional shooting, breathing, trigger pull, etc will save you money by dry firing drills as mentioned above. Any invitations by experienced shooters are golden opportunities to take advantage of. Most important is remembering the responsibility of safe gun handling and safety when training. Good luck.

Post count ++?

Back on track...

I would say that the best thing you can do is join the Beloved Corps. After that, do not expect to make it to Scout Sniper school. Very few people do. Even fewer that aren't Infantry make it, though there are a few slots held for others. Quite a few MP's (relative to other MOS's) make it, because of the Special Reaction Teams (If they're still doing that). Your chances are slim as it is, but almost negligible if you don't start off as an 0311.

That is my one major regret from my time in the Corps. Should been a grunt
