RRA A4 Varmit Range?

I bought a RRA varmit with an 18" barrel a couple of years ago for coyote hunting and the intentions of learning how to shoot at longer ranges than I can with a standard deer rifle. It currently has a cheaper bushnell scope on it that works great for hunting, but now its time to put some better optics (meaning something that has great repeatability) on it and start to push the range I currently know how to shoot. In order to figure out exactly which scope I want I first need to know what kind of range I should expect out of this gun with factory loads before its accuracy begins to fade (I do not have a reloader). In all of my searches all I can find is groups at 200 or even 300 yards. I know mine will shoot moa with 55 Vmax at 200 and me behind it. So can I reasonably expect this gun to run moa out to 500 to 600 yards? Further? Curious to see what others are pushing it to and what kind of factory loads they are using.

Re: RRA A4 Varmit Range?

I have a 20" RRA A4 and have shot to 550yds with good results using handloaded 69 SMK's. The wind is a much bigger hurdle than the range. I would look for 75 or 77 match loads when shooting past 300-400 yds.

Re: RRA A4 Varmit Range?

My 20" shoots moa at 500 with 69 gr handloads. Never shot any factory stuff through it, but when I was doing load development, it was moa with about everything I put downrange at 160 yards,With my pet load averaging about .5 to .7 moa.

Re: RRA A4 Varmit Range?

I have a 24" A4 and its a very accurate. 500 yards 3-3.5" inch groups..3-4 inch at 600 and even not bad at 1000 with 77 SMK's. I'm impressed how accurate these are for a factory production AR.

Re: RRA A4 Varmit Range?

Thanks I figured it should be capable of about 600 to 700 pretty easy, but not having shot that far before I wasn't for sure. That pretty well seals it that I need a little more scope than what I was planning. As of now I have a couple of boxes of hornady 75 grain HP to see how that groups. I am also trying to find a factory load with a 62 grain TSX. From what I have read out of a bolt gun with a longer barrel these both shoot consistent at longer ranges.

RRA 20" SS Wilson 1-8 twist 23.5 grs IMR 4895 69smk 2.260 oal win brass win primer. Velocity around 2750 fps

6" 5 shot group last time out at 600 The bullets were sierra factory seconds 69smk

3 holes were in a 3 inch group I think the wind got me on the other two which opened it up to 6 inches.

Re: RRA A4 Varmit Range?

I had a RRA 18" varmint and it was very consistent out to 600 yards with black hills 69gr and 77gr. My friend has a 20" and he's shot it out to 850 yards and he made hits but more hit dirt than the target and even at 700 yards its the same deal and takes quite a while to get it on target. I consider the max effective range of a 223 gas gun to be 600 yards. More than that and you should look into a bolt gun (223AI in a bolt does very nice) or a different caliber.
