thanks to everyone here who help me in deciding wich rifle to get, i read a lot of posts here before i made my decision.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

guys you are in for a treat i just got mine last week and no shit it shoots 1/2" groups at 100yds 5 shots of course. i bought the 26" and had the barrel cut to 22" and put on a r&d brake. it was consistently hitting the 6x6" plate at 510 last weekend also and it not the best of conditions so i am confident it is shooting at least moa at distance if not better. I had few others tell me how accurate theres were before i bought mine and was skeptical until i got it and shot it. all i can say is wow didn't expect this level of accuracy out of a semi-auto under $1500

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Got her in today, now im waiting for funds to build back up, in a monthe or 2 i will be adding a scope. more pics to follow when i get time this weekend to put her together, gonna use the millet 4-16x56 from my AR-15 for now till i get the scope for her. still trying to decide on wich scope to get, leaning toward the millet lrs-1 in 5-25x56 due to the fact that i was very pleased with the clarity and quality of the 4-6 millet. it really is a great scope for a sub 400$ optic.

it took 2 weeks to get it in so hopefully you guys wont have to wait that long for yours

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Hopefully it will quit raining and i will get a chance to go to the range saturday, seems like i never remember my camera when i go.

I'm also gonna start keeping a logbook, something i have never done before, but this is probly the most accurate rifle i own now, so i think it would be a good idea to keep track of how it shoots and how many shots fires through it

Jeepguy
I am not sure where you shoot around Winston but PM me I don't live but about 30-40 minutes from you and I have a range I can use anytime I want to. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new rifle. I have a RRA Entry tactical M4 and I love it. Sorry DPMS got my .308 ar purchase.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

pm sent, as for shooting around winston, i used to be a member of the rockingham county gun club, but that became quite a haul when i mooved from greensboro to winston (got out of the apt and bought a house) i was thinking about joining the piedmont handgunners range as it has a 200yd rifle range, but i was really hoping to find something close that has a 500 now that i got the .308

what ammo are you running in yours, and what kind of groups you getting? </div></div>

I really haventr tried any match ammo . I have just been shooting 147 grain ball ammo and I got killer deal on 1000 pulled 147 grain fmj and had a bunch of 3031 powder so I have been loading plinking ammo. I average around 1.5 inches at 100 yds. I went a different direction than the heavy precision rig. I put an a1 stock on to shorten the pull and went with a magpul moe rifle length hand guard.
I need a new optic and to spend some time with the reloading press

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Seems the only complaint with these is feeding due to the mag design. How has your guys luck been? Definitely interested in one of these in the future. Could be atop the christmas list. (Damn and its only Feb)

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

i havent read anything bad about feeding issues except for when cheap surplus mags are used. i havent had time to get to the range YET, as tonight is my first night off in a week, but sunday i am taking her out and i will let you know what happens after i get her zero'd in.

i have headr that SOME guns have slight issues while breaking in, and to just roll with it for 200-300 rounds untill it loosens up a bit.

i do know one thing, the upper and lower are a real bitch to put together because they are so tight..

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I bought two, RRA replaced them both because of feed issues. I sold both of the replacements without putting a round through them. They both shot very well at 100yds of the box; 3/4" IIRC but were jam-o-matics if I had fewer than seven rounds in the mag. Too bad as I really liked them.

how long ago was this?, i read alot of posts from 07 when Armalite sold the design to RR but since then i have read that the RRA has been solid with feeding

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

The first one was from the first batch RRA made September(ish) 2009 and the second was a new serial number just before they released all the new models at Shot 2010. I didn't fire the replacements as I wanted to sell them unfired. However, neither purchaser complained of problems as I would have let them return them if they did. I really like RRA, and the concept is great, I just figured two bad ones was too much of a coincidence for me.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I have not had one feed issue or anythign else as far as that goes. I bought mine a year ago for 1050.00 out the door.
I have 11 mags , the one that come with the rifle and 10 I bought at a gun show for 12.00 a piece.

msrp on mine was 1505.00
paid 1339.00 shipped from oneclickshooting.com (through gunbroker.com)

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I have a carbine version. The only time I have had feeding issue is when I have held on to the mag well/magazine when firing. Put hand out on forearm where it is suppose to be and all is good.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Hey Jeepguy, I have a RR LAR 8 with the 20 inch barrel. I love the gun. I have only shot it about 4 times out and never had a feeding issue. The gun is guaranteed 1 inch or MOA and it shoots better. You have a longer barrel - it should be super accurate.

I have a video I made and I might post a new thread on it. Have fun!

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I have owned an RRA LAR-8 Varmint w/26" barrel for a year and a half now. It is an exceptional rifle. I have equipped it with; Leupy 8.5 x 25-50 Mk IV, Magpul PRS stock with an Accu-shot monopod, and Harris 6x9 bipod. The only feed issues I've had were due to out of spec mags. I have had great results with Federal GMM 168's. That being said, Black Hills 175 BTHP Match are unreal. They're spendy, but the results are phenomenal. I've had .35" and less results with regularity. I am no shooter, it is the equipment. I can shoot better with this rifle than with my very well equipped Remy 700. This probably due to my inexperience. I think you are going to be very happy.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

took my new Rock River LAR-8 to the triple target range today, and here are the results.

8 shots to get it printing right under the crosshairs from 100 yards with a bipod and a rear sandbag.

after that it was game on!!!

2 targets. the first being sitting with the rifle on my shoulder on a rickety old bench amd a semi wobbly table, tried 2 shots within a second of each other at each target.
IMG_0001.jpg

this target was from the prone position, rifle on a bipod and butstock on my shoulder with closed lt fist supporting bottom of butstock 3 shots as fast as i could aquire the targets. i ran out of ammo, so i couldnt finish the target.
IMG_0002.jpg

as you can see, i did much better from the prone position..

rifle functioned flawlessly, no jams, misfeeds or hiccups...

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I have an LAR 8 and really like it.. I’ve only had the opportunity to shoot / put around 400 rds through it thou..

I did do some experimenting with it thou.. it’s actually very (Lego friendly) just about every AR / 308 part I tried on it fit..

IMG_8769-1.jpg

I ended up with the magpul front rail, grip and a adjustable rear stock, to each it own.. Yes I used a 308 buffer and spring (for what its worth) I also installed the a JP brake on it, not that it needs it, I just like load guns

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Polished the bolt..

IMG_8908-1.jpg

I left it out here somewere??

IMG_9082-3.jpg

Here it is..

IMG_9130-2.jpg

Here’s my neighbors son trying it for the first time and banding steel at 500 yards, The ACOG really helps and works well on the gun, for what it worth guys..

IMG_9435.jpg

Overall, I think the gun is hands down worth every penny of $1,400… I was going to buy a conversation kit for my DTA SRS

IMG_7463-4.jpg

But I ended up with this gun for the same price..

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I just recently got a LAR-8 Stardard operator and just love to shoot with it. I put over 400rds the first week and hitting 8" steel at 300yd & 500yd is not a problem.

Linkpimp: what does polishing the bolt do for the gun? How do I do that? Sorry for the newbie question

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Sorry about that jeepguy. I reread the post and you did shoot the gun. A old man's mind sometimes slips.

Look forward to more news on your gun.

My RR shot great at 300 yds. I am hoping that at the end of this month or next to push it to 500 yds.

The RR was supposed to be a 100 to 300 yard gun - an inexpensive short range SASS - but it shoots so sweet, I am thinking of extending that range. Take care man and have fun with your new toy.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I talked to RRA and they said not to use the magpul prs stock. I wanted to put it on mine but they said it did not fit the A4. How are you using it if they say it will not fit? Thanks

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I have the lar 8 in 16" and 26". The 16 is my deer rifle and the 26 is what I shoot in the local matches. I love them both, my favorite rifles! I think everyone should have uhhh at least..... 6 of them!!

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Just so you know I have a PRS on my LAR and I did not need to raise the cheek piece for a good weld. I bought the extension from Brownells but didnt need it. I am running a EGW 20 moa down riser and Medium burris rings and have no height issues. FYI.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Here is my LAR 8 with the Magpul PRS installed. http://youtu.be/2mzfMpLTQgQ

I ran into the same problem that everyone knows that this stock has, but maybe I can get a little help with a link to a site that sells a solution, Say a spacer or something...Ive heard of them but can find it anywhere. If not then I guess Ill have to get out the Dremel tool

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

I've posted these before, but this is what my RRA LAR-8 will do. The first is a 5 round group, the second is a 10 round group. Both were shot starting from a clean, cold bore.

Needless to say, they can shoot!

I have however broken three BHO rods on 3 different rifles, which causes me some concern.

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Does anyone have any suggestions or a success story about any particular hand load? Ive been rolling my own 168 gr sierra BTHP with 46 gr of Varget and CCI Large rifle primers. Ive also been wondering if I should crimp? or just set the bullet like normal. Im shooting a RRA 26" Varmint A4 model 1/10 twist. By the way, how do I post pics?

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Well, the targets I shot above were from my handloads. I used a Nosler 180gr Ballistic tip, 42.5 gr. RL15, Winchester case, Fed. 210m primer. No crimp.

Shot from a LAR-8 Varmint 26".

Re: RRA LAR-8 arrives tomorrow

Oh ok, Well I was considering something like that for hunting big game, but my 168's are just for long range steel targets. Ive been using up some old PMC brass that I had left over from the last of my store bought rounds. It was cheap brass...maybe not a good idea to use it for any kind of accuracy at all, but Ill buy better brass when this runs out. thanks for the tip and good groups! I need to find out how to post pics of my groups and such. I shot around 1 MOA groups at 325 today. Wasn't too bad considering there was a 10mph cross wind that I was having to compensate for. I did .75 MOA for the cross over adjustment.
