Went out to the range yesterday and started getting really good groups with the new powder...

SMK 168gn
Varget 42.5gn
Mixed winchester and federal brass

here are the 100 yard targets.. all targets were 5 shots, next i am gonna go between 42.5 and 43gn in .2gn incraments to see if they tighten up a bit. best group of the day was 43gn at .63moa, but the 42.5 produced 2 holes on 5 shots at .70moa. probly me as i didnt have a rear bag or bipod and was just using a rolled up towel. gonna get a sandbad this week and try it again..

that 42.5 gn second group was 5 shots, but it doesnt look like it to me. if 1 fell really short, or really high. i can tell 4 shots but im not sure on the 5th one.. i cant see myself putting it through the same hole, but i must have.. (i hope) i am chalking it up to pulling it untill i see myself doing it again LOL

Excellent results. Especially with a make-shift rest. One thing I would recommend you try to possibly further improve your grouping, is using a 1 MOA diamond or dot for your target. I personally have found that I shoot tighter groups when I aim at a smaller target. Just a suggestion.

thanks, i will try that... i just used these cause it was easy to download and print, i never thought that a smaller target might make me concentrate a little more!!!

You might try using only one brand of brass instead of mixing them up. Also, the 1 in 10 twist tends to like heavier bullets (not necessarily always the case, but tends to be that way). I have the 26" LAR-8 Varmint and this is what mine does with the following load of 180gr Nosler Ballistic tips and 42.5gr. of RL15 powder, Federal 210m primer, Winchester brass:

This is a 5 round group:

And this is a 10 round group:

I've posted these before, but have done this on several occasions with this rifle. It stays within MOA or better out to a 1000 yards also.

that is the same rifle i have, i will have to try that load... thanks...

as far as mixing up the case, i load 5 winchester, all the same, and then 5 fed all the same.. only reason is i dont have alot of brass for it yet... i am planning on buying some as soon as i get to the gun shop (make 1 trip as i will need bullets and powder also.)
