Republic of Texas.
So there are some pretty decent sales on the Ruger Americans right now.
CDNN has them on sale for $299.

I was thinking about getting a .243, for a beater rifle/ ranch/ truck gun.
Just a rifle that there is no emotional attachment to, haha.

Is there a reason not to go this route?

Any of you guys got any wisdom or experience to add for me? Thanks guys, have a good one.

I don’t personally own one, but I’ve shot a few of them. All but one have been in the Predator models, but the .223 American I shot ran great and was pretty dang accurate. I’d say for $299 that’s a pretty good deal!

I've shot a couple, and they are (surprisingly) very accurate guns. The triggers suck, but they can be modified or replaced with a Timney drop-in trigger (a bit of a whore to install, but a huge improvement).

The mod involves tapping a 1/4-20 hole into the existing trigger clearance hole, and using a grub screw to change the sear engagement. Kind of makes me wonder why Ruger doesn't do that from the get go, but hey, lawyers...

There is a cheaper solution/easier. After market spring change for adjustable trigger. Drops pull weight below 2.5and using very small washer in my junk drawer I got rid of the wiggle as well. Now it's a very respectable trigger pull. I will look for the link/email for company that offers the spring....

I have a RA Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor that I use for deer and coyotes. It is remarkably accurate for a sub $400 gun and is factory threaded for a can. The trigger was not impressive out of the box but I removed some coils from the factory spring and it works great now. My biggest complaint was the original stock sucked and the magazine was unreliable. I purcased the Magpul hunter for it and problem solved. Overall, it is a great value and PVA is making prefit replacement barrels for the RAP when this one is done.

Those barrels are not the same install as an RPR correct? How do you go about doing that, or is it a send off deal?

Not like the RPR, the Ruger American barrels are more like a savage or remage with a barrel nut. You screw the replacement into the receiver with a headspace gauge and then tighten the barrel nut to set the headspace. Pretty easy to do once you have seen it done.

I bought this at the beginning of November for a truck gun, yotes, pigs etc. and with 69gr tmk it’s surprisingly accurate, like 3/4” accurate. I had to take some sandpaper and Open up the stock around the barrel. It’s “free floated” but if I put a bipod on it the the stock was flimsy enough to come up and touch the barrel. Not bad guns for as cheap as they are and where I’m at in west Texas it lives in the truck, dust dirt, coffee. If something gets on it I’m not cringing and it’s held together well
