Ruger M77 Hawkeye Tactical

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye Tactical

This is the wrong place to ask that question. The word Ruger is like a dirty word around here. I have a M77 mark 2 and it shoots great. Its a 1/2 to 3/4 MOA rifle all day. I've had it for years and its always been my meat getter so this year I'm showing it a little love with a new barrel and chassis. Some of the guys here are pretty harsh. If I wanted any opinions I had to ask caliber specific questions. Anyway good luck on your choice. One thing they are hit and miss as far as accuracy. Also aftermarket parts are almost nonexistent.

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye Tactical

I have one in 243 with a Millett 4-16x50. The first box of old ammo down the barrel produced about 1.5MOA groups but they were all touching the lands. The second box with about 0.02" gap was less than 0.3MOA vertical but opened to 0.8MOA horizontal due to wobbling rear bag. Haven't shot the third box yet but have some 95gr Bergers loaded. Don't like the trigger but have not attempted any adjustments yet. I'm satisfied with mine but having a new one built in 260 Rem on an FN SPR action, Shilen barrel, and Manners T5A stock.

You kiss your mother with that mouth????

All joking aside, and at the risk of flaming. I also have a Ruger, it was my first "real" rifle. Its the KMVT (one of the few good ones IMO) in 25-06, and this SOB shoots! on a good day it'll put 5 100SMK's into .4 inches at 200yds. I know that is uncommon/unheard of for a Ruger, but thats why I love her. Sorry I dont have any input on the Hawkeye

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye Tactical

There is nothing wrong with SOME Ruger products, including some of their M77 rifles, but the biggest problem is HUGE inconsistencies in the quality (of the products at large, some discrepancies in barrel/component quality) and thus, accuracy, of their products. The next BIG problem is the proprietary nature of the rifles (i.e. - craptastic scope mounting) and the lack of aftermarket support for things like stocks, etc. as compared to other rifle platforms.

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye Tactical

I have a Ruger M77VT .220 Swift Heavy Barrel that will embarrass most custom rifles out to about 300 yards with the factory barrel. Excellent rifle, heavy barrel, laminate benchrest type stock, and wonderful two stage trigger.

That being said, besides rebarreling, there is not a whole lot I can do to it because of lack of accessories. About the only stock options are the cheapo plastic ones, or paying out of the arse for a custom one off for Ruger inletting.

I am happy for what it is, and that is a scary accurate stock rifle and prarie dog murderer.

Re: Ruger M77 Hawkeye Tactical

I have a couple full customs ... GAP, etc, and they shoot lights out. I also have a Ruger Hawkeye Tac in 308 and it shoots great. The tupperware hogue stock was crap and I replaced it with a B&C Carelite (took some inletting for the bigger trigger the hawkeye has over the MKII) and once bedded it shoots .75 MOA all day with hand loads. Im a Ruger fan and I know that isn't popular around here but I could care less. Im currently working on a 338 M77 build and will continue to own and shoot Rugers. A little load development to fins what the rifle likes and they shoot fine. The new LC6 trigger is pretty decent for a stock trigger also. For all those ruger haters out there ... sell me your POS flatbolt Rugers ... Ill take them any day. The new Hawkeyes aren't bad rifles either.
