Looking into putting together another bolt gun and I had pretty much settled on a Remmy 700 build. But I actually got to look at a new Ruger M77 and was kinda impressed. Anyone here with experience shooting them, how they perform? Will probably go with one chambered in 6.5 Creedmor if this is the direction I decide to go. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yeticowboy - You stated a "Remmy 700 build" in first sentance - what are you wanting to do with this rifle? This will dictate what direction to go.

Re: Ruger M77 performance

Take a look at how many smiths actually work on Rugers.
Hint: they will be hard to find.

They have improved since the old man died, but they still enjoy a reputation of being very hit or miss when it comes to accuracy.

It is a shame, they make a very handsome rifle. If it is nothing but a hunting rifle, buy with confidence that it will be hunting accurate and will do the job.

If you want an accurate rifle, stick with the 700, Savage, Howa, Tikka, FN etc...

Re: Ruger M77 performance

I have owned a couple different Ruger M77 rifles and I would pass on them based solely on the complete lack of any meaningful aftermarket support for things like stocks, scope mounts/rings (although you can go to a Farrell-type base converting the @#$%^& Ruger proprietary mount/ring setup), etc.

Remington 700 and 700-footprint actions would be where I would start if I were you, regardless of the direction you are going with your build.

Re: Ruger M77 performance

Mainly as a target rifle, but I will likely do some hunting with it. (Varmint) I haven't seen much talk on here about the Rugers. Wondering if it's because they aren't very ideal for this type of shooting. I will probably still go with the Remington action but if the Ruger action is any good maybe I could use that. Really just trying to find someone that has some experience with that platform. There's tons of info about the Remington. Haven't seen nearly as much about the Ruger.

Are there problems that hamper the Ruger significantly?
Is it going to cost more money to build a target rifle based on the Ruger as opposed to the Remington?

Basicly is it worth my time and money to go with the Ruger over the Remington?

Re: Ruger M77 performance

Ditto on all above - that's why the original question as to the use.

They are OK for general hunting and are "hit or miss". Have M77s - one is a tack driver, the other is 1.5 MOA "loaner" I let others use.

"Accessorizing" a 700 is virtually unlimited.

You made the right choice.
