So I'm new to the forum and just getting into PRS/Steel target shooting and have a Ruger RPR that I'm using as the base for my first build in 308. Right now I plan to shoot up to 1000 yards mostly during the day and possibly low light. I'm in the process of looking for the right scope and want to spend my money wisely and could use some guidance.

I'm budgeting for a Spurh mount and a scope in the $500 - $800 range. I'd like a FFP in MIL with a simple and clean MIL hash/dot/diamond reticle and am open to fixed or variable power. Any suggestions for a good all around option in this price range? Is fixed going to be harder to shoot with the further out I get? My view is I can always dial a variable down.

I've looked at the Athlon Midas Tac and several SWFA scooes and like the tracking and zero stop of the Athlon reviews I've seen online and the forum. Like I said before though I'm new to this so you all know way more about optics than I do so feel free to drop some knowledge on me, thanks!

Dump the Spurh mount and spend more on a better scope, more ammo, and a good class. Spurh mounts are super cool but a total luxury Item. It's not a must have by any degree. Burris XTR-11, Bushnell DMR2, Vortex PST Gen 2, are all outstanding scopes around $1,000. Good luck, welcome to the rabbit hole.

This is good advice. A set of AR height rings (Vortex Pro or others in the same price range) will be fine, and the money saved is much better spend on glass.

Thirded fourthed, whatever. You don't need a Spuhr; if you want luxury get a Really Right Stuff mount. Hell, I have a 30mm 1.57" height ARC from when I had a RPR myself - I'll come way down on my price and sell it to you if you choose a 30mm scope.

Agreed with the above statements... as a spuhr owner, save your money and put it into the scope fund. There is no need for a $400 mount on a $500 optic. Get a good set of rings and spend as much as you can afford on a good scope.

Alright so the Spurh is out and I'll drop most of that into the scope and get decent rings elsewhere. I was thinking along the lines of buy once cry once with the mount but if it's not worth it for a cheaper scope I agree with you guys in getting better glass and practice.

I'll keep this in mind once I make the final decision on what I go for. I'm going to hit my local shops to see if they have any of these optics so I can get hands on and I'll let you all know how it goes.

Any other opinions on optics in the sub $1200 - $1400 range?

Drop the Sphur, buy a set of Vortex or Seekins Precision Match rings, and buy a Leupold 8.5-25x50 F1 for $900 from Midway (on sale now). It's not a sexy scope but it works.

$1400 will get you an Athlon Cronus, used Steiner T series, Vortex Razor gen 1, and maybe gen 2.
There are some good deals on Sig Tango6 scopes out there too.

You are in a sweet spot budget wise, there are so many great options- just avoid the turds and/or brands with questionable reputations.

Look on the used market here, or talk to some of the vendors. You will get great prices and service.

Plug for Doug @ cameraland, this is a solid buy imo:

Optics planet has some good sales.

You can get a decent set of rings for $100

I'm in the market for something similar in the $500 range. Thinking of trying an Athlon unless I can find a good used deal.

The reviews I've seen for the Athlon Midas Tac say it has good tracking and the same internal stainless steel mechanism as their higher end scope with just cheaper glass I believe.

Another option is the Steiner P4Xi 4-16x56 with Steiner ring promo from DSG Arms for $1,000 or under. (create an account, you’ll get a discount) While it doesn’t have the top end magnification as some of the others that have been mentioned, it is an excellent optic for 1,000 yard and low light engagement. SCR mil reticle is awesome. Not cluttered but definitely has enough to get the job done. Those .2 windage holds have fared nicely. Turrets feel awesome and tracking has been spot on. Easy to zero with a firm Zero stop. Eyebox is not too finicky and parallax is easily removed. IQ is crisp and easily focused with very little CA that I notice.

As another Spuhr user, I will also echo this.
