Of the offered rpr ( 22lr, 22mag, 17hmr) which would give a better training feel for long distance with a centerfire? Would be using on steel and paper. Not for hunting. Yet. Love the 22lr. But there’s an allure to the mag. Just wanted food for thought.

I'd think one would want to go where one can find good accurate and consistent ammo. There's not a much of a selection ffor 22 mag or 17 hmr like there is the 22LR. So . . . with the slower, but more accurate, 22LR ammo available, one can best learn how to read the wind, which is so crucial to long distance center-fire shooting.

(y) . I appreciate it. Makes complete sense. I like the idea of low cost training that doesn’t beat you up. I also like what Ruger has done with the rpr. Also seems like a good way to help train the son to love the distance shooting too.
As far as ammo goes. What should I be looking for in a quality 22lr

SK, Lapua center x, lapua midas, maybe CCI standard velocity
My ruger liked the fiochhi sub sonic 40 grain.

I've had one for two years, converted it to .17M2 for killing squirrels in a filbert orchard. It works very well for that. As a trainer I feel it's too light and the butt stock is too flexible to compare to any decent centerfire. My Vudoo V-22 in a KRG Bravo and Tikka T3x Varmint in KRG Bravo are a decent comparison.

Maybe a Tikka T1x in a KRG Bravo chassis? That's a very nice platform at a good price with much better quality control than the RPR IMO.

+1 on these.

There are some other's that are high end and can be very good, but a bit pricey like the Lapua Midas (e.g. RWS R100, Federal UltraMatach, Eley Tenex or maybe Wolf Match Extra). Just gotta remember that none of them can compete with the consistency or accuracy of good center-fire ammo.

Realize that it may take several hundred, or in my case, two thousand rounds through the factory barrel before it starts to show good accuracy. So go with the cheaper ammo, like CCI, at first. As the barrel gets "shot In" then buy the more expensive stuff, like SK, which is what mine showed a liking for.
Later on, you may want to go with an after market barrel. I bought a 20" Shaw barrel and now have a little over a thousand rounds through it. It loves SK rifle match and I've been shooting with a chronograph and lately have noticed very consistent velocities with the rifle match and my 50 yard groups have been averaging 1/4 to 3/8 inch at fifty yards.
