Ok first off 3400 and below for a scope no issue at all. It's what I saved up for a scope.

I'm wanting the 5-23x56x for my new left handed 338 I'm building.

I'm pretty new to using a scoped rifle and plan to get training but I want the best scoped for my rifle I can get. I used someone elses rifle about 6 years ago and had never done so. At 450 yards I consistently put the bullet in the X ring. I held over after my first shot. Funny thing is I used my pc gamer scope skills from armed assult/ operation flashpoint and combined that with my marksmen skills learned in the army and it all worked! (lol)

So after I did all that I decided I had to have a bolt gun

So my main issue right now would be the small tick marks and how you read them. Case in point:

I guess you count them but if your in a big hurry Murphy's law could sneak up on you and make you miss count. I plan to hunt dangerous game at close and long range.

I like nightforce too and I recently saw a vortex at scheels. So is the S % B the easiest to setup and get on target for the pricier scopes? Also I'm a tad iffy about the ret as I was for some reason expecting mildots.

Re: S & B 5-25 x 56 CM P4F or a Nightforce?

What you have in the picture are Miliradian (Mil) marks at 1,2, 3, and so forth. The small marks are tenths of a Mil. If the scope has a MilDot reticle, then you have turrets that match the same value of the reticle. I beleive the turrets in the picture are MTC, which gives you a little harder click at each Mil, so when you dial through the range of elevation, you will feel each Mil, whereas the tenth of a Mil clicks will be softer.

Probably not a good choice in scopes for hunting dangerous game. If you have a rhino charging you at less then 50-yards, the last thing you need to worry about is what elevation you have dialed into the turrets on a tactical scope.

Re: S & B 5-25 x 56 CM P4F or a Nightforce?

If you want first focal plane Nightforce isn't an option other than in 3.5-15 power (F1) - yet. And the new "beast" 5-25 NF may not be for another year or more.

As to being iffy on the reticle. What reticle did the S&B have P4, P4F, Klein, H2CMR, MSR??

+2 on "Dangerous Game" and 5-25 power scopes.

Re: S & B 5-25 x 56 CM P4F or a Nightforce?

If you want the best, get the S&B scope

The marks are pretty easy to deal with, especially if you have one like pictured above with the MTC turrents. Most of the time if you are in a hurry, you do it by feeling the clicks as you go by.

One thing to note is that if you plan to go close up dangerous game hunting in Africa for example, you will want to have a rather different setup than your long range tactical gun rig, you may want to talk to a few guides about guns, but you'll probably find you may wind up getting a dedicated gun just for that.

</div></div>

Nothing more needs to be said.

Re: S & B 5-25 x 56 CM P4F or a Nightforce?

You can have issues with the left handed bolt and the illumination knob on the PMIIs
Not ideal for left hand rifles

Great scope if you can make it work

Cheers

Re: S & B 5-25 x 56 CM P4F or a Nightforce?

I really want the S & B . How would I get it to work with the IK and a left hand? Would the bolt handle need something done to it?

Re: S & B 5-25 x 56 CM P4F or a Nightforce?

I have a Stiller Tac 30 in a T4A. I will send you a pic of it later today. Not sure how the Long Action will be but I am having issues with the brass hitting the Parralax knob and bouncing back into the action. But that is a stiller issue not the S&B. To clear the bolt handle my scope is pretty far forward but its perfect for me.

Here is a view from the top with the bolt all the way forward.

And from the side not a lot of room but it works for me. You cant manipulate the bolt by grabbing it you have to use your finger tips almost.

Re: S & B 5-25 x 56 CM P4F or a Nightforce?

Let me rephrase that. Its the extractor. Mine has a m16 modified extractor. It causes the brass to hit the parralax knob and bounce back into the action. Does not happen every round but it happens. So if you are on the clock it can be a pain in the butt if you dont know that it bounced back in. It is the only thing that I'm not a fan of with this action. I dont think there is anything you can do for it as I cant move my scope more forward or back far enough for it not to hit. My buddy told me about the issue with his NF as well. But I couldnt afford a Defiance so Stiller was the next best thing. I love my stiller though!
