I have the oppurtunity to purchase a new S&B Illuminated P-3 Double Turn/Mils, 5-25x56 for $2600. Do I buy it and replace my Nightforce 5.5-22x56 NP-1R w/zerostop on my TRG-42? I'm very happy with the Nightforce (except the eye peice turns when you change magnafication, which is a pain if you want to use a flip-up cover.)

What I would really like, is a 3-12, 3.5-15, or 4-16 with 50mm obj. with MilDot/Mil for a 308 build, but this is such a great deal that I'm thinking I shouldn't pass up.

Comments?

Nothing wrong with a S&B 5-25 on a .308. Mine wears one as does my 6.5 Creedmoor. $2600 is an excellent deal for that scope. You should get it.

Re: S&B 5-25x56, great deal, but do I really need it?

I had a S&B 5-25 on my 0.338 LM and just bought the second for my 0.308 rifle to replace the NF BR 8-32 it had the only scope I will never change is the Leupold mk4 m3 10X

I’d definitely recommend getting it, that is one of the nicest scopes around and at that price it’s a pretty much a no brainer if you can afford it. The extra magnification is very useful, for example you can see your bullet holes on a paper target at ranges that you would normally have to come off the rifle and use a spotting scope for.

Plus, if you REALLY have to have one of the lower power S&Bs - I'll bet you could trade straight up for it or even make some $$ on it in the trade. However, I think once you see it, you'll not want to get ride of it.

You might want to see about sending bm11 a PM, he has a S&B PMII 4-16 that he is interested in upgrading to a 5-25x56. You might be able to work out something with him.

You want it you know you do, if yo don't it will haunt you. Several years ago bought I bought a S&B military AI MK II 3-12 mil. for $800. imagin how I would feel if I let it go. NF are good scopes no question but the down side of the first S&B purchase is you will be buying more. I have the others but prefer the SB.

Re: S&B 5-25x56, great deal, but do I really need it?

bm11 actually contacted me to tell me to get the 5-25x56. But this morning I secured one with the P4F reticle for $2376 plus shipping. I've only handled one in a store, and looked down the isle through it no more than 100-yards, and it had the P3 reticle. I just hope I like the P4F, and its not too fine for my taste.

Alpine 338,
It all depends on what you are going to use it for.
You will hate it if you are going to stalk animals in wooded areas. If you are going to use it for shooting groups at more than 300 yards. You might not like it.
If you are going to shoot steel, animals, etc.... at long distance and maybe close to sunset or sunrise. IMHO you can not find better.

Also, you can not go wrong at that price...
Use it, if you do not like it sell it. You will probably sell it for more than you paid for it.

Does anyone know the thickness of the P4F lines? The S&B website is outdated and only shows a P4, it also says the P4F is not available in the 5-25x56.

Stalking animals in wooded areas in lower light might be tough but turning on the illumination helps. But for everything else it's an excellent reticle. It shines in shooting groups even past 300 yards. No chance you won't like it for that purpose.

The PMII 5-25X is definitely available with the P4F reticle. Mike at CS Tactical, Matt in Virginia, and Mile High Shooting Accessories are all Hide' vendors and have all posted about them for sale before. It closed more than three months ago, but another Hide' vendor, Opticsspecialist (Sport Optics) ran a a very short window (2 week) Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25x56 LP Group Buy this past April. Available options per the GB:

- CW or CCW turrets
- Mil or MOA turrets
- Reticles: P3, P4, P4F.

Have your money ready and wait for the next sale - check the Sniper's Hide PX : Group Buys and the Optics & Accessories For Sale section frequently and you stand a good chance of finding a PMII 5-25X MIL/MIL for sale at a fair price. Good luck.
