Finally have settled on a S&B 5-25x56 ccw mtc.

Now, which reticle? Am leaning toward H2CMR or MSR but availability could be a problem. And of course there are always the P4F or Klein; both of which are in stock.

The scope will go on a Remmy 5R 308 used for mostly paper and steel out to 1000 yds so really any reticle would serve.

However it seems that the H2CMR and MSR offer more than a basic aiming point so would be a more versitile option.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
OFG

Re: S&B reticles - so many choices

I just traded one of my P4F scopes for one with the H2CMR. No time behind it yet, but looks like I'm really going to like it, probably more than the P4F (and I do like the P4F). Time will tell....

Re: S&B reticles - so many choices

If possible, get behind a few and check them out yourself before purchasing the scope. You're getting ready to spend upwards of 3k and first hand knowledge of what you're buying would be helpful in deciding which reticle to get.

I'm down in Birmingham and will be happy to let you see the P4, GenII mil dot and P3 mil dot reticles in my S&B's. Matches are also good places to peek at reticles. Most folks are happy to let you look through their scopes.

The P4F is a very popular reticle, most people love 'em, but it's too thin for me. Just an example of reticle choice being highly subjective and personal.

I have the 5-25x56 ccw mtc with the H2CMR reticle and love it! I also had the 5-25 with the P4F which was also nice, but definitely prefer the H2CMR it brings a lot more to the table.

Re: S&B reticles - so many choices

P4F is an excellent reticle but the H2CMR has become my favorite after using it. I love the .2 mil marks on the horizontal as I hold all my wind and also for movers. The .1 marks are nice for ranging also. The hollow mildots allow you to see them well even down to 5x. Also the whole reticle illuminates out to the heavy duplex.

I would rank them:
H2CMR
P4F
MSR(only because it costs more)
Klein
Mildot

Pics of the H2CMR and P4F that i posted recently. I suck at through the scope pics so don't hold it against the FOV or clarity of the scope as both are better. The round steel is an 8" target at 400 yards. I dodn't have a 25x P4F pic. Sorry

Re: S&B reticles - so many choices

I had a P4F put in my 3-12x50 PMII a little while ago - most of my shooting is on paper out to 1000yds. The scope hasd Mil clicks to match the reticule.

It is a great reticule for what i use it for but I do not use it at low mag in this scope as, depending on the background, it does get tough to see below around x6 - x8.

Re: S&B reticles - so many choices

i'm a bit hesitant about the fine crosshairs. sure nice for very long range, good light and high contrast- as shown in the pictures above.

but at dawn/dusk, on a dark background/surface (woods), it might be hard to actually make out the crosshair. just look at the above pictures and estimate the contrast you would get by holding that crosshair somewhere at/in between the trees.

That's when you turn on the illumination

Seriously, you need to pick the right tool for the job. If you were going to be doing all your shooting at dusk/dawn then the standard P4 might be a better option as it's a little thicker.

Re: S&B reticles - so many choices

The MSR reticle thickness is right between the P4F and P4.

The P4 is too thick, IMO for the 5-25 (good on the lower powered scopes).

The P4F is good on the higher powers on the 5-25, but I find out, the more I shoot, I am using lower powers more (10-15) and the P4F is a little fine there.

I really like the MSR thickness overall, and if you ever want to mil a target, nothing I've seen, including spotting scopes, compares to the little milling reticle in the MSR.
