?'s on AR10 build

I built a couple of AR15s and now I'm considering building a 308. Am I right by saying they're two styles, DPMS or Armalite in regards to parts compatibility?

I've been eyeing the Mega Maten upper and lower. Looks to be a good quaility part for the price. Any reason to go with the monolithic upper verse the standare upper, pro & cons?

Will any AR quad rail fit an AR-10 upper? Larue, Daniel Defense, Troy, Midwest Industries?

Are gas blocks specific to the 308 or is barrel diameter the only concern?

Thanks for any input,
Outlaw

Also looking at barrels, some are 308win and some 7.62x51, what's the difference? One NATO and one's civilian right? I assume 308win will work in a NATO chamber right?

Re: ?'s on AR10 build

I have built several AR-10s using Armalite compatible parts. I did not do the uppers, but built the lowers. They go together just like an AR-15.

The Mega Ma Ten does look appealing. I think the decision to use the monolithic upper may depend on optics and mounts. People seem to either love or hate them. I have owned several (primarily Vltor VIS uppers) and sold them due to weight.

Regarding rails, you have to get a version made for either the Armalite or DPMS pattern. Most of the manufacturers you list have Armalite and DPMS versions of their rails.

You might consider looking on ar15.com at the FAQs in the Armalite and AR Variant forums. Much valuable information over there.

Re: ?'s on AR10 build

Thanks, yeah I think because of weight I'd like something like a Troy battlerail or VTAC handguard. The round handguard as opposed to the quad rail would be better in the hand. I would only need a bi-pod. Probably don't need most of the rails.

Outlaw, here's a little reading for you. It's a write up I did on my build and evolution.

Here's a few things to consider about the MA-Ten platform. The MA-Ten is the most versatile in compatiblity when it comes to components. Yes you can use DPMS or Armalite pattern parts, but the key is to stick with one or the other; i.e. don't use a DPMS bolt with Armalite bbl. Yes these are like AR15s in the fact that its easy to actually build them, part A goes in slot B etc etc, but the caveat to that is those parts may or may not play well together.

The 308 platform is a different animal than it's 15 sized brother. And the problem with building is that if you have malfunctions you don't have a single Company to go to, you have 3 or 4 or how ever many different ones. There was one gent on here who used JP components and was having issues for example, but he did get set up.

I do highly recommend building though, don't get me wrong. All I'm saying is make sure and do your homework. I did lots of homework and hours of research PMing and emailing folks on different options. Doing a build vs buying allows you to use only the components that you want, or think you want and then upgrade like I did with my stock. But you aren't limited to the options that the Manufacturer has, although there are many many options.

Now as far as a Mono or not............. Monos have their pros and cons. Cons are mainly weight concerns. To answer that, look at LMT and Mega's new monos. They are single top rail and drilled and tapped to accomodate rail sections. I personally konw what option I'll be purchasing when I have money to dump into a 6.5 build.

Mono is entirely up to you the user. I have mine and love it. The pros far outweigh any cons in my book. Hope this helps.

Re: ?'s on AR10 build

Thanks already read that. That's what got me thinking about the build.

I'm leaning towards just the MA-TEN upper and lower combo. I think I'll go with a round forearm and Rainier Select 20" barrel.

Check out the PRI carbon fiber handguard. It uses a standard barrel nut wrench, is very light, has minimal rails on it and it looks great.
I also have to suggest getting a Fulton armory barrel. Those things shoot great and are under $300. It will consistently stack rounds on top of the last.

Re: ?'s on AR10 build

The MA TEN is a great way to go.
I went with the Monolithic upper.
If you are going to scope it out then you have the flexibility to move your scope around with more options of mounts.
I went with the 18" Ultra Match barrel from Rainier.
Very accurate as are all the UM barrels.
I went with DPMS for PMag compatibility of mags.
I don't see a compelling reason to go with a MA TEN non-mono upper unless you want a different free float tube such a JP or something.
My comparison of weights never revealed anything significant.
I have one MA TEN and two AR15 platform monos ~ great combos, IMO.

I have since pulled off the UBR and replaced it with a PRS and trying to figure out what to scope it with.
I am leaning towards a NF F1 but they have been scarce lately.

Re: ?'s on AR10 build

How much does the upper and lower cost from mega if you use the mono vs the not mono? Could you entertain me with a parts list price list break down minus the barrel? Someone who has built one from scratch? I would like to do it myself if I can't figure out the cost vs just buying a DPMS 6.5 creed and pull the barrel and replace the trigger.
Thanks,
T

Re: ?'s on AR10 build

Outlaw, Armalite barrels use proprietary length gas tubes, DPMS uses standard AR15 tubes.

Todd, a far as price break down goes, cross reference my build list with Rainier but omit which ever parts you don't see yourself using. If you are thinking about a simple rifle with A2 stock for 6.5 you might be plenty good getting a DPMS and upgrading the trigger. It all depends on your personal preference. When I do my 6.5 build I'll use Mega's single rail mono upper. I fricking love Mega so I'm sold.

Re: ?'s on AR10 build

Todd I tried to send you a pm but you are over your limit.

I would 2nd the Mega. Just purchased a Ma-ten set to do a 6.5 creed on. Opted not to get the mono due to the extra cost. I am just piecing it together as funds allow. All I need is buffer and hand guard. I think I will go with the JP but love the looks of the Samson.
