I'm looking for a new AR-10 to hunt deer/target shoot with. I've narrowed it down to those two and can't decide what to go with. The M&P 10 has an adjustable stock and a threaded barrel (I'm assuming that the flash hider is removable) but the stock will have to be replaced with something that has a recoil pad so that it is comfortable for my wife to shoot.

The DPMS has neither, not a big deal on the stock but I was planning on adding a muzzle brake if the recoil was too sharp for my wife.

Any opinions? I have about $1800 to spend, including any accessories (adjustable stock, muzzle brake, etc.).

I already have a scope for it and will only need rings.

You want the the Threaded Barrel and Adjustable Stock then go with the DPMS Recon GII. It'll be a better choice and plenty accurate and handier.

The .308 really do not gain much more speed pass the 16" Barrel length yet the handiness and mostly likely lighter weight is a good trade off. Besides, I believe the GenII will be lighter than the M&P10.

Just my 2 cent

HOG.

I just sold my M&P10, but did use it for hunting last year and it worked pretty well. Was rather finicky to start with and had to be well cleaned and lubed to cycle fed fusion reliably and anything more than 20 rounds required more lubing so I wasn't thrilled with the reliability. It was light for a .308, but from what I understand the DPMS GII will be lighter. Will be getting a SCAR 17 for hunting this year.

If I were to buy another one for hunting in your budget it would be the recon GII and a few upgrades like MI's new keymod rail to drop the weight some more, geissele, etc.
