Middle 'Merica!
A friend from work sent me these pics and said, "I inherited this old revolver, do you have any idea what it is?"

It's an interesting revolver!

Any idea what year this model. may have been made? I'm asking the guy to bring it in to work and let me check it out more closely. My hunch is that it is a late make, 1920s/30s?

No clue, they started making them in the last quarter of the 19th century and stopped in the early 1940s.

Best bet is to contact S&W for a letter of history based on the serial number if it has one. If not, http://smith-wessonforum.com/

I used to have one. It was in 38 Smith and Wesson. It was made probably in the 1920s anyway. Be aware that cartridge is not to be mistaken for 38 special. It is much lighter than a 38 special and not considered good for much of anything compared to today's modern rounds.

The break open action was considered great for reloading while riding horseback but a much weaker design compared to a swing out cylinder. A fun gun but mostly a conversation piece
